But I think what this really does is point out the deeper problems we have with out entire approach to policing. shootER's link to the story about why militarizing police has been such a catastrophic failure. The PR photo of the fat, cowardly Uvalde wannabe SWAT team should be the go-to meme for anyone who wants to make a point about the need for a complete rethink of our policing philosophy.

As more information comes out of what was and wasn't done. The worse the LEO's on scene become. A lot of action that wasn't taken. Officers being held back from what they could have done, what they wanted to do. When the whole truth, or as much of the truth that is found out comes out. Lot of heads are going to roll, massive law suits, and even more resentment of the police is going to happen. I didn't want to believe it, and still don't. But I'm really starting to suspect and believe that some of the deaths that occurred may have been from the police shooting their weapons.

Yeah, all them Latins are exactly alike...well, not exactly. One thing I gradually absorbed from many years in the cultural hobo stew that is Tampa is that Latins from different parts of the world are not monolithic. Spaniards, look down on Cubans with their own stereotypes. White Cubans and black Cubans have a history that the don't like to talk about, Mexicans, Central Americans and South Americans have their own prejudices towards each other. Of course, there's the strange case of Clarence Thomas who's worldview wouldn't be out of place at a Klan rally.

Quite possibly, but I also think it's quite likely that the surface level appearance that they were scared is the full answer because even good guys with guns aren't an effective protection from a bad guy with a gun.

I know that Mexicans don't like Puerto Ricans. I work with a lot of people from El Savidor and I haven't really detected any major predjudices, but I don't think those groups you mentioned would purposely sit by and let children be murdered. Now that's different with street gangs ad the like.

For ~10 years, I was a big fan of Art Bell's radio show. He had on both credible people and total fucking nutjobs, regardless, it was an entertaining show. Then Columbia broke up on re-entry. My assumption was that Bell would have on Michio Kaku (who knows a thing or two about such things, even if he thinks that nuke-powered probes like New Horizons are too dangerous, or Robert Zubrin, who know about crewed space missions, even if he's got the personality skills of Dayton. Nope. Instead he had on Richard Hoagland who claimed that a secret society had the crew killed because there was an Israeli onboard who'd give away secrets about space aliens once he got back to Earth, nevermind the fact that there have been at least 17 other Jews in space. Okay, so maybe that guy had been the only Israeli Jew, but he was unlikely to be the only devout one. And there were Muslim astronauts before and after him. Surely, if there was some kind of coverup going on, one of the others would have spilled the beans. But they didn't.

Prior to the Columbia disaster, I found the shit that Hoagland (and Bell) spun to be entertaining bullshit. I knew what they were saying wasn't true, but it was fun to listen to. Once, however, they co-opted Columbia breaking up to be "proof" that they were "telling the truth," that was a bridge too far for me. There were legitimate reasons to call out NASA for what happened, but that wasn't the road they took. So I didn't see any reason why I should continue to listen to Art Bell or Hoagland. It doesn't matter how entertaining your crackpot theories might be, if you're exploiting the deaths of innocent people to promote them, you're human fucking garbage.

So you now understand that criticizing the police is not the same thing as calling them racist? Do you now get that there are a multitude of things that are wrong in this country and that racism is just one?

You fail to understand that minorities can consciously or unconsciously absorb and act on discriminatory mindsets and follow patterns/systems that are prejudiced through default or design. Which, to be clear, I have no particular knowledge if it was at all a factor here. But the notion that people who are minority cannot perpetuate racially biased decisions against their own kind is misguided.

Right-wingers understand it when it's Africans who participated in the slave trade.
