A friend of mine once told of overhearing a couple of guys in a restaurant talking about hunting. One of them was saying that on his outing he hadn't gotten anything, but had had a few sightings that he shot at and missed. He then added, "I also got off a couple of sound shots." My friend, even though it wasn't really his business, went over and told him what he thought of that practice...
Why don't you ever mention the state, if you want to reference the candidates' attitude towards it? And why does your link simply connect to an empty reply box right here on WordForge?
The ultimate in stupidity? Shooting somebody who is in a TREE STAND 15 feet off the ground. That is rare, but it happens. Yes, anybody who shhots at sound should be institutionalized. If the hunting area is "bucks only" of course you have to look for antlers. When it's "any sex" some idiots will shoot at what they think is a moving deer. For those non-hunting WF members, deer don't usually move out in the open. They are in thick, thick brush in many cases. So, you will hear them before you see them. But anyone shooting at sound is insane IMO.
Hunters shooting each other, eh?! I want all gun owners to post how this rarely happens and why it happens. Also how it could never be YOU that shoots someone by mistake.
Why it happens? One reason is you are indeed shooting at a clearly identified deer, but miss and the bullet hits someone hidden in the brush. This is not too common. Another more common reason is you shoot "at" what you think is a deer moving through the brush. Usually this happens during a "drive." A drive is several hunters (drivers)walk through an area they think is holding deer, pushing/funneling them into an area with several hunters (standers) who will ambush the deer as they move ahead of the drivers. The deer often try to sneak back through the drivers rather than be pushed into the ambush (yes, they are that intelligent). Remember this is in very thick brush, and it's easy to lose track of where the other hunters are. IMO it's a dangerous way to hunt, and rarely effective.
Without the total number of hunters out in Iowa over the weekend the statistic is meaningless. Oh, and fix the source link, it links to the post new topic page of Wordforge.
There's an acceptable percentage of motorists that get killed, an acceptable percentage of airline passengers that die in crashes. I'll let you guess which activity has a higher mortality rate compared to hunting.
Depends...what's an acceptable percentage of automobile drivers that get killed? I'm betting it's higher than hunting by a long shot (no pun intended).
One of my cousins shot one of my uncles deer dogs by mistake. Mind you his end of the gene pool is rather shallow to start with.
I don't what ya talking about? What dodge? I asked you if there is an acceptable percentage of hunters that get shot. What is this car and airline crap?
I fail to see your panties in a wad over traffic deaths. There have been almost 400 traffic deaths in Iowa in 2007 alone. What's up with motorists? What's the acceptable percentage of fatalities on Iowa highways?
If the acceptable percentage of airline crashes or car crashes were 0 then we would outlaw both. Since they are not outlawed then there is an acceptable amount of death from both each year. Therefore, if the acceptable percentage of hunters getting killed was 0 hunting would be outlawed. It's not.
Ok I know there is a chance I can get hit by a car or die in a plane crash. Are you saying that there is a certain level chance that you will be shot while out hunting? Cuz something like that never crossed my mind. That's kinda fucked! I guess thats part of the fun and excitement for hunters.
Oodles of people in Europe used to hunt way back when before gun ownership was regulated into the ground. I guess America hasn't gotten that civilized yet, but I'm sure you're pulling for us. As for hunters getting shot, drivers getting killed in crashes, etc. my point was this: In any activity there is risk, period. The reason the hunting accidents are "news" is because they are so rare. When they become commonplace (like automobile deaths) nobody will care...they will just accept it. Only 5 killed on highways in my state on Memorial Day weekend? Way under quota...we're making progress!
I thought Idiots Out Wandering Around was clear enough... Crappy work computer, what can I say. Link fixed now.
I just don't understand this comparison to road deaths. That is, unless we are talking Death Race 2000.
Do we still drive even though we could die? We (others) still hunt even though there is a remote chance we will die.
You sure got it worked out to make you feel good. But hunting sounds more like playing in traffic. You mugs kept that a secret from me. Drunk drivers, drunk hunters......dang!!
