Season Two finale. Shades of Gray. The flashback clips were not even well chosen. Of course Shades of Gray was hurt because it was basically no more than a rough draft. Maurice Hurley said as much. The producers basically telling that they were out of money and needed one last episode cheap, cheap, cheap.
So what are the worst episodes for each series? My nominees, none of which will be all that surprising, are Spock's Brain Angel One Move Along Home Context is For Kings
TATV is a big FUCK YOU to everyone around but not that bad per se. That one where the dog gets ill or something is much much worse. Also, TOS' space hippie episode. I still cringe at the thought of it even though I last saw it like 25 years ago. TNG has a few bad ones too - mainly the run of the mill 'meet seemingly nice people but there's something wrong with them' which they did like 10 times per season.
What was the one where Picard & crew beam down to his planet of African looking aliens and they kidnap Yar because she was so “beautiful”
Actually it turns out though that the head guy kidnaps her and then claims he wants Yar to stay as his wife, so when his wife challenges her, Yar will presumably kill the guys wife so he can inherit all her wealth.
TATV was just flat and lame. It was a zero. For negatives, actual contenders for the title of worst episode ever, you have to go to turkeys like Threshold, Code of Honor, and A Night in Sickbay.
TOS: The Way To Eden - irritating characters, boring and pointless story, you can tell even the actors didn’t like this one. Runner Up: The Omega Glory (Gene Roddenberry wrote this shit! What a mess of an episode) TNG: Shades Of Grey - a clip show? I don’t even know if it’s fair to call this an actual episode. I’ve seen better compilations by fans on YouTube. Runner Up: Sub Rosa (Brannon Braga garbage, Dr. Crusher gets finger fucked by a ghost) DS9: Profit And Lace - Quark in drag. Need I say more? Almost all the Ferengi episodes are awful but this is the worst of the worst. Runner Up - The Muse (Lwaxana Troi is probably the most annoying recurring character in Star Trek, but thankfully this was her final appearance) VOY - Bro, I don’t even know where to start... ENT - Didn’t bother with this show... DIS - Probably not gonna bother with this one either... if you enjoy it that’s great, I’m not trying rain on anyone’s parade but I’m just not interested anymore
that whole "79 episodes, about 30 good ones" thing? yeah, I'm not sure any of GR's scripts are in that 30.
Original Series- ones mentioned already plus "The Children Shall Lead"- one good moment in that entire episode when Kirk says regarding the children "We'll have to kill them". If only.
Spock's Brain is the most famous bad episode but probably not nearly the worst. It is famous largely because of the 1) It was the Season 3 premier. 2) A horrendously hokey and stupid episode title. Looked at objectively the concept behind the episode (using a brain to be effectively an organic computer to control the infrastructure of a civilization) is not at all unreasonable.
Shades of Gray definitely has to be the worst. With every other terrible episode, they were at least trying. A clip show built around Riker remembering scenes he wasn't even in is the epitome of not giving a fuck.
Where H&I got up to TATV, yesterday was "Broken Bow". Ssss.....mixed bag. Decon chamber... Archer and Tucker's anti-Vulcan whining? Holy shit, I kept expecting their bottom lips to wiggle like crying schoolboys. "You held us back!! You held us back! Daddy wanted to see his ship fly!! ". "You held us back!! You held us back! Archer's daddy wanted to see his ship fly!! ". If Kirk or Sisko were captain, they'd put their hand on Tucker's shoulder, point into his face with the other, and say "hey....shut the fuck up....and get to work...or I'll chuck you out the fucking airlock. ".
I don't like that they play every episode in order. Now Enterprise is starting over and we have sit through every shitty episode all over again. on the other hand, now that every Star Trek episode ever is on, it's fun commenting on them. Perhaps we should start a thread specifically for the H&I? Oh that's right, I can do that by changing the thread title.
Voyager is some decent, middle of the road Star Trek. There's no episode I'm clamouring to watch again, but there's no episode where I'd rather just turn the tv off if it happened to be on. I can't say that about TNG or TOS.
BBC America shows episodes of Voyager. I can't watch but about five minutes before I want to destroy all of humanity.
