I'm surprised I haven't seen this here yet.

    "Think Tank" being unbelievably stupid:

This is probably going to knock the Tory's vote count quite spectacularly. Who knows if this'll just blow over...

Cameron is desperately trying to disassociate himself from this, even though this is the think tank that gives him most of his policy :)

Stupid Tories. They can kiss goodbye to any slim chances they had to win any seats in the north.

London is pretty cool, but I've yet to find a big city that a didn't like.

Surely there is a way to get the manufacturing cities up there to rolling again. Steel is in high demand.

Once a city reaches a "tipping point" and the shrinking tax base (from workers/tax payers) can't support all the welfare/unemployed that stay behind, it's an uphill struggle.

At least is how America works...I can't speak for England.

The residents of these cities can't figure this out for themselves, or on the other hand, take action to make their lives better and stay?

I think the point is, this 'think tank' got it badly wrong

There's an article in today's Sun by Kelvin MacKenzie about how right on the button the think tank is. He's already wiped out Sun sales in Liverpool, looks like he's getting ready to write off everything north of a line from Bristol to the Wash... :diacanu:

Meh, it's a silly conclusion to draw: parts of the north are extremely prosperous (see Chester and Harrogate, for a start), parts of the south are close to third world (the New Forest, Margate and Hackney spring instantly to mind). But it is fun to watch Cameron's desperate attempts to disown the entire exercise...

I like living in the North. The majority of places are not as destitute as people like to think.

Great idea, send yet more interlopers to London and the south east, like we don't have enough already!
No city is beyond redemption. Certainly not Liverpool, home to the Beatles and a certain magnificent football club.

I'm with Frankie Boyle on that one - so the average healthy life expectancy for that city (the age at which serious illness is likely to set in) is fifty... living in Liverpool, maybe fifty is a bit long:

"Hey, there's a sniper down in the town centre!"

    "Great, let's get down there!!"

 That's not to say that there aren't lovely places in the South, of course. But if you're talking economically, taking into account incomes against the cost of living, half of the top fifty 'wealthiest' places are up here -- places that because of lower general costs allow a good proportion of disposable income.

And I don't know why people say that Liverpool is bad -- I've certainly not experienced anything terrible all the times I've been. Like all cities, it has it's no-go areas but generally speaking it's a fun place.

Reports like this are meaningless, IMHO. Made up by people who live in their little bubbles without experiencing anything else, and think that the rest of the world therefore must be shite. Just because an area is on an economic downturn now doesn't mean it will be like that forever and a day and you should up sticks :jayzus:

South coast. It's quite nice there - lot of wealthy, retired people, nice beach, nice hotels.

I knew it couldn't have been about Yankees, 'cause Mini started the thread.

But if somebody will start a thread called "Yankees deserve to burn in hell", I'll make the RR look like somebody wrecked a milk truck. :j:

"Shite" is the softer variant of "Shit".

Given that we're talking about the general North, I felt this spelling was more accurate :P
