So now Obama's going to announce his support for a freeze on discretionary non-military spending as his next big "economic" initiative. It's a transparent gimmick that accomplishes nothing and a Republican talking point to boot, a talking point specifically run on by McCain and ridiculed by Obama in 2008, and he's making it the central aspect of his State of the Union address.

The Democrats have no beliefs, no spine, no political sense, and no base. They've pissed off the left, will never win the right, and just look weak and mewling to everyone else. They are going to get slaughtered in 2010 and 2012. Before today I didn't believe it was possible for Obama to lose in 2012, but he seems destined to prove me wrong.

I'll be voting Republican from now on if I bother voting at all. Better to vote for the arsonists rather than the drunken chain smokers who always pass out on the couch with a lit cigarette in their mouths. At least with the arsonists you know the damage is coming as soon as possible and can prepare without living in fear until the day it inevitably happens.

Oh, hell, I could never summon up that level of contempt for humanity.

Shit, completely going over the edge, and sniping people would be more merciful.

    I'm not that merciful.

For the lesser evil to be useful it needs to have an upside, a chance that things will improve, even if that chance is only that the lesser evil acts as a holding pattern until something better comes along. Otherwise we're better off just burning it all to the ground and starting over. There is no upside left to the Democratic party.

You've given yourself to despair, don't project it to others. :borg:

I'm long past despair. What I've achieved in recent days is acceptance.

    Whell...have fun with that...:itsokay:

Although...that would make for an interesting poll...

Wouldn't it be hilarious to discover that the republican party exists, because of lefties who gave in to hopelessness...

...said hopelessness being caused by republicans in the first place...

..why, that would actually make conservatism like cancer..

The solution, however, is not to "vote Republican." Until we get a political party that actually governs for the good of the people (and I do not believe either of the two main parties are likely to do that any time soon), the best we can get is to use them against each other. When the Republicans ran everything, it was disastrous. When the Democrats ran everything, it was disastrous. The best government America has had in a long time was the last 6 years of the Clinton administration.

Personally, I am hoping that the Republicans take a solid majority in the House in November, that the Democrats maintain a solid majority in the Senate (none of this "51 votes" business, so that one person changing parties changes the whole setup), and that Obama has no legislation sent to his desk that is not acceptable to both parties. It still won't be pretty, but it's less bad.

I think you're discovering what those of us who consider ourselves conservative (as opposed to neo-cons) felt with the Bush government and what the Republicans became when they had the House, Senate and White House all at the same time. Replace "Democratic party" in your post with "Republican party" and quite a few of us on this board could have written the same thing (and did, fairly often) during the last administration.

I said it eight years ago, I'll say it again: the only polls that matter are the ones on Election Day.

This November ought to be interesting.

You would be right if the Whitehouse doesn't give a shit about what the polls say.

They do, and a strong public opinion against certain legislation can force a lot of lawmakers to backpedal in their support.

Which is kinda what is happening with the healthcare bill.

And a different set of numbers--the Dow. A couple weeks ago it was fairly strongly in the 10,600 range. Then last week the Obama started yammering about bank fees and increased regulation for financial firms and it started to drop. The morning after the State of the Union Address it is in freefall around 10,000.

The only poll numbers that matter are the "strongly disapproves" - they're the ones who will not only not vote for the person, but who will vote for an opponent rather than just staying home. So again, let me know when Obama's strongly disapprove hits 50%.

Holy crapweasel! He's at -21%. Apparently his inability to come to a resolution on the debt ceiling and possibly his embarrassing recent press conference have really hurt him. Has he ever had a lower rating? :marathon:

[EDIT: My bad. He's been down to at least -24%. ]

He's really going down in flames. It's laughable.

Even the media is starting to slowly back away from him. Considering how he and his administration treats them I'm surprised it took this long.
