Obama was viscously attacked, so was W, so was Bill Clinton, so was Reagan - none of them debased the institution by responding in kind - each of them just went out and executed their agenda (to varying degreees) and let their success do the debating.

I don't really think Johnson votes were indirect votes for others as surveys suggest they would have split fairly evenly in a two party race. STIEN on the other hand drew almost exclusively from the left and theoretically was as responsible as anyone for installing Trump (and she was smoozing with Flynn and Putin at the GRU dinner too so....?)
