No. The story is everyone did their jobs, and the Chinese did a better job of hiding than we did of seeking.

Again. BAD THING. Its ok, it isn't your fault you're massively stupid.

Is 'got it' actor-code for 'Tell me how stupid I am'? Or is it something similar like 'Failure'.

Do they say 'Got it' after you go to your auditions?

There are three options on the table here.

    1. This is a non-story.
    2. The Chinese pwned us.
    3. The Navy blew it.

    Choose wisely. :)

#2 can be correct without #3 being correct. You just don't seem to understand that, from:

And that isn't the case. The Chinese demonstrated an ability far above any previously shown. We now have to increase our ability.

    Like you, with acting.

If you're talking about their tech, then I have to disagree. This type of sub tech has been around a long time. Or, maybe, you're just referring to the skills of their sailors. In that case you're right.

Either way, I think we blew it. And, of course, I hope we fix it.

Well, fear has the benefit that you don't really have to earn it. Any thug can make someone fear them. Respect is a tad trickier - I'm not surprised the microwave instant gratification generation of Yanks hasn't mastered it.

Yes, the notion that the need of an urban-dwelling Yank for a vehicle designed for off-roading simply because it makes them feel safer (either from carjackers or "getting wiped out by an eighteen-wheeler") and/or more sexually potent outweighes the environmental impact of said vehicle IS fairly retarded.

As is picking a fight over a joke, Mister Angry-Pants. ;)

I've heard that "joke" enough times to last me the rest of my life.

And I notice you're so lighthearted about it that you still bother with the bullshit portrayal of SUV owners and their reasons.

    You may fuck yourself now.

The US does so to actively deter China from invading Taiwan, one of our strategic allies.

Um, while I am sure some people use them off road, the majority of people do seem to like them because they feel more safe. Hell, that's the argument that other SUV owners on this board have used before.

I drive too much to criticise anyone else on their choice of vehicle, but I will say you need to climb down off your high horse.

Three or four torpedoes won't sink a carrier.

Put it out of action for a few hours or days at least.

Force it to be towed back to San Diego at worst.

But sinking a supercarrier with a few torpedoes would be at best a fluke.

Not to mention an act of war which would see the U.S. swarming all over Chinese shipping and certainly blockading the Chinese coast and bringing the Chinese economy to its knees.

A nuclear tipped torpedo could do it... in theory.

I'm fairly certain that a nuclear-tipped torpedo would send a super carrier to the bottom.

The problem with that being that your country would shortly be sent back to the Stone Age as your military and infrastructure were wiped out in retaliation.

The sub popped up because it didn't have enough ballast.

The Chinese sent all their lead to America.

    Can I ask a question...

Is it possible that the Navy knew the sub was there the entire time, but didn't let on so China wouldn't know that we could see their sub.

    It's actually a win/win.

The Chinese get the prestige of having gotten the drop on a supercarrier.

The Pentagon gets funding for a new hunter/killer submarine.

    Everybody happy!

I don't know. I smell bullshit on this one. Don't see why China would tip its hand that it could sneak into the middle of a battle group, even for the prestige.

Told my coworker this story. He was on a DD about 20 years ago. He was reminded of the day he was standing lookout aft, fell alseep, and was awakened by the engine noise of a Russian Bear bomber overhead. As he heard an officer stomping toward him to chew him out for not reporting the Russian bomber that could have killed them all, he yanked his phone line out of its socket and pretended to be trying to figure out why it didn't work.

Three or four modern ones at close range certainly could sink a carrier.

Modern torpedoes don't actually hit the ships. They explode under them and the air bubble that forms from the explosion is what does the damage.

Three or four torps under her keel will break her back and send her to the bottom. The ships are tough but they are not invincible.

If they were fired from abeam perhaps.

Which is hard to do because a carrier battle groups average speed is always faster than a submarine can travel and not be detected.

And torpedoes fired from astern would have to get past a carriers two Nixie decoys wouldn't they?

Tactics. Apparently you don't know them. :mystery:

Hell, U-Boat crews figured out how to beat that problem in WWI.
