There is no Republican Civil War. It is fully the Party of Trump.

One of our two major parties has gone completely cult of personality and anti-democratic. They are currently working in overdrive to limit voting and get their people in charge of elections in case there is another close one (targeting Secretaries of State).

How the fuck do we get out of here?

Trump getting killed or the unlikelier scenario of his conviction.

They'd find another idol, but essentially, America's done at this point.

It's interesting to me, the parallels between the current Trumpish slant of the Republicans at the "grass roots" level and the 2016 embrace by the Democratic machinery of Hillary Clinton. The current Republican issue is (supposedly) that the beltway members of the party hate Trump and are unaware of how much of a grip he has on the base, while the 2016 Democratic Party leadership was bound and determined to run Hillary with no apparent awareness of how widely despised she was outside of their own little echo chamber. It's almost like mirror images of each other. In 2024 the Republicans may be forced to run a Trumpish candidate while in 2016 the Democratic leadership cheated their own primary system to make sure Hillary was the candidate. Honestly, in 2016 the Democrats could have run almost anyone other than Hillary and would have won. In 2024 the Republicans will run Trump Mk II and almost certainly lose.

The parallel I'm drawing here is that the "leadership" on both sides is making essentially the same mistake: not understanding what's happening in the base. It's the danger of the echo chamber, surrounding yourself with people who parrot your preconceptions back to you.

The QAnon types that are apparently converging on DC on March 4th to await the Second Coming of the Donald won't care when they block your car and start smashing things. I'm concerned for your safety.

Republicans spent three decades whipping up hatred for Hillary, accusing her of endless crimes and secret murders, and holding more investigations into Benghazi than they did into 9/11, and she still received the second highest number of votes of any presidential candidate at that point in history, and a higher number of votes than her opponent.

Wow, I didn't realize we were only supposed to talk about political figures who are currently the president! Traffic on this board is really gonna take a nosedive once people figure that out.

Perhaps it's a good thing. While Trump won in 2016 by making many populist, centrist promises (which he mostly reneged upon) and by having an exceptionally unlikeable opponent, he and his party are now too toxic to centrists to win nationally. He's no longer a wildcard that centrist voters could "take a chance on," but a known quantity of destruction and incompetence.

The only trouble is, Dem voters always have trouble showing up in mid-term elections, so '22 will be a slaughter if Republicans show up in the numbers they did in '20.

Trump tried to overthrow the US democracy less than 6 weeks ago. He's going to be a topic for quite some time - especially with all the lawsuits and trials in his future.

That's about the only thing in your post that's close to the truth.

The Democratic Party sadly underestimated both Trump's popularity and Clinton's unpopularity.

I think that's right about Trump but I don't think Hillary's problem was unpopularity (among "gettable" voters) so much as a lack of ability to energize those that might have been disposed to vote for her. Particularly black voters in some cities. She didn't lose because 40% of voters despised her, but because 20ish% of potential voters were "meh" about her. And likely a ton of those assumed there was no way she cold lose to a fool like Trump so why bother to go vote for someone that didn't motivate them.

No, Hillary lost votes because enough people who would normally vote Democrat without a thought were all "Nope, not for her." This combined with undecided/Republican voters who might not have bothered to vote at all because they didn't like Trump took a look at Hillary and were so repulsed at the idea of having her as President that they not only came out to vote, but voted for Trump to prevent that from happening.

Older generations, yes, but I'm hoping the last 4 years have been a much needed wake up call on that. There was record turnout in '18 and there are more progressive leftists than ever. I imagine a number of the purple-y states that didn't have mail-in voting will likely keep it available, which will also boost turn out.

Course, it would be nice if Biden would get on with getting us our money and cancelling student loan debt to give people the warm fuzziest to WANT to go out there and support the party. :garamet:

I mean...I wrote in "Deez Nuts" on my ballot in 2016 because I was safe in her winning my state, but Clinton was miles away the better candidate.

Anyone who think we'd have had the same COVID shitshow with her at the helm is a fool.

And Democrats can't win on policy or ideas, all they need is "get rid of Trump!" :shakefist: Now come 2024 they might be in trouble when Trump is completely gone, but who knows?

And I may be wrong but that's why so many people voted for Biden - they wanted Trump gone. The Dems could have ran a baseball mitt (okay they went with a dish rag but still) and won the 2020 race.

If that's what you believe (and it's the only thing you keep repeating ad infinitum, ad nauseam) then you can sit down and shut up for the next four years, can't you?

But you're so scared - of what, you can't say - that you just keep babbling.

And you still refuse to say why you voted for Trump. Sucks that you can't go deer hunting until October, but I'm sure you can find something to do besides running rampant screaming ":ohnoes: Biden bad, Biden BAD, Biden BAAAAAD!!!!!!! :ohnoes:"
