    Convince me I don't want a S&W 1911A1.

It's a S&W so it's horribly over-priced and then you have to spend extra money to get it up to excellent standards.

    Oh and it's not a Glock. :P

    Limited to 8 rounds?

His advice is sage and I agree with it 100%. Here is a test for you to do when you are comparing them. Load up a magazine for each pistol and insert the magazine. Then rack the slide to load a round into the chamber of each pistol. Then try to use the magazine release button as you normally would. That right there might make your decision for you. Another thing to do is check out what parts from each company are available for you to purchase.

finally, forgive me if Im covering something you already know, but the MSRP on pistols normally is far higher than what you can get them for retail. See what the prices are going for on the weapon you want to buy at budsgunshop.com and gunbroker.com. Then see if any of your brick and mortar stores will match the price + shipping + ffl fee. If they will, then you might want to support your local store. If not, screw em, find a pawn shop that does FFL transfers for $20 or so and by from gun broker or buds and tell the brick and mortar to piss off and why.

Nine rounds. And nine rounds that hit are a whole lot better than 17 that miss. I just shoot a 1911 better than I shoot anything else.

Are there exceptions? Sure. But, the vast and overwhelming majority of self-defense shootings involving a handgun take place at arm's length and involve two rounds.

Some people used the shooting in Vegas yesterday to invoke the more rounds is better line of reasoning. I disagree and here's why. The police were involved in a running gun battle with this guy as they were trying to pursue and subdue him. As John Q. Public, you're not going to pursue and subdue anyone. If he's running away, you have no right to run him down and use deadly force.

That said, anything you can shoot well is better than a stern word. I've also seen a ton more people killed by .22's and .25's than I have anything else. Anything beyond that boils down to personal preference.

I can't really say much as a Kimber owner, but the further you get away from standard on John Browning's design, the more likely you are to fail. That said, I've heard of no reliability problems with S&W's external extractor. I just think they're overpriced when new. If you could back into a deal on a used one, I've got no beef.

Why? I know on the Glock I can have one in the chamber and yet release the magazine. I could also fire that one round in the chamber if I wanted to.

There's not a damned thing wrong with Glock. But, I switched to Glock because I had to, not because I wanted to. That has always been a bone of contention for me and now that I can carry .45ACP in a 1911 or P220, you can bet your ass that I'm going to do so.

    Magazine disconnects are teh suck!

They're meant to protect idiots who think dropping the magazine unloads a weapon, but they render a weapon useless if the magazine is lost/unavailable.

Its not about the magazine disconnect. Its about the design of the XD(m) and its magazines. With a loaded chamber and magazine you will either have to use a fantastic amount of force to eject the magazine. The other option is to push up on the magazine while you press the release. Then you wont have to use that much force. But now you have compromised your firing.

I'll take the magazine disconnect, though its not ideal, over a magazine that is extremely difficult to eject.

I'm not sure what you're on about. My mag drops right out... In fact it throws it out. Did they change that with the xdm?

I'd go buy a two dollar pistol and wait for some guy to drive up to the convenience store in a Corvette and with a cute girl, just so I could tell him, with absolute certainty, that she was hotter than a two dollar pistol and the fastest thing around.
