Ft. Mill is nice, but expensive. Rock Hill is just too damn crowded. I looked at a couple of houses in Clover, but overall I'm happy where I am. :)

When I was up there I liked those areas. From what I found the tax burden is a lot lower. But the trade off for more land could be worth it. From what I have been told the Folks from FL move to Lake Norman and the Nc residents haul ass to the Ft. Mill / Rock Hill area.

Probably the Huntersville/Concord area. They have a huge ren fair there every November. I'm going to try to check it out this year.

York County has a good school system and it's convenient to downtown Charlotte.

Here's another strange thing I wasn't expecting. Once you have a valid CCW in North Carolina, you no longer have to do NCIC checks when you buy a firearm...in North Carolina. Isn't the Brady Bill Federal law?

    It is Federal Law.

Is that the state telling you they don't have too or a store that told you?

    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics

I know in Florida even with a CCW you still need to do the background check.

They said it in the class I took.

Same way in TN. I guess the the Fed leaves it up to the State whether or not a carry permit is an exemption or not.

As long as the CCW license has an expiration date, the Feds allow state governments to decide whether or not to conduct an NCIC check for a firearm purchase. Doesn't make sense to keep checking if you cleared during the CCW license application.

If you were convicted of a felony, you would have your CCW taken away, so it's not like getting a CCW gives you the ability to bypass a background check.

Unfortunately, only a few states acknowledge that logic. Like Zombie said, Floridians still have to go through the trouble (and pay) for a background check for every firearm purchase.

There are exceptions and parts of the Brady Law were either found unconstitutional or were voided. IIRC states have the option of using NCIC or another database. I believe that Florida uses an alternate database for background checks. Also in Florida if you have your CCW there is no waiting period.

If you have a CHL in Texas, they don't do the background check when you buy a gun.

Yabut here's no background check at all in NC if you have a carry permit.

Additionally, you don't have to get a North Carolina handgun purchase permit thingie.

In hippy WA it took me about an hour. No classes, good for five years.

It can up to 5 days if you do it by mail.

Question: We're all required, by federal law, to have the ATF do the insta-check, right? But, then some states are going above and beyond to verify your status via NCIC?

I ask because the insta-check, to my understanding, doesn't actually check NCIC. I say that because NCIC has a feature that could lead to trouble. One of the many reasons I've never abused my power to look up WF'ers is because it would leave a paper trail. NCIC records a hit every time someone looks at "you." It would lead directly back to my operator number and all of my data.

It would also be a back door gun registry, me thinks. Lets say I pull you over for speeding and I run you through my laptop's connection to NCIC. I could go to the second page and see all of your hits. If I see ten (or any number) hits related to gun purchases over the last couple of years, that could make me treat your differently.

In TN, the only background check they do at all is NCIC that I'm aware of.

I do know that among the other background checks they do in NC for a CCW is NCIC...and if a LEO were to ron a person's tag who has one, it will immediately show up that that person has a carry permit, but as I understand it, even the NC handgun purchase permit doesn't go into any database, other than the fact that you obtained the permit it's self...and I'm not 100% sure even that is retained.

Aha! I may have found the confusion. NCIC is not NICS. This form, the short form we all fill out when buying a gun, is called into NICS.

What do the call the part where they make the phone call, or alternatively, enter information into what looks like a credit card POS machine, and then wait for a response? Is that NCIS as well?

<edit> Nevermind. You're right. I got it all turned around. It's NICS, not NCIC.

I just picked it up yesterday, and I'm underwhelmed. It's just a laminated piece of card stock. It barely fits in my wallet, and won't fit behind my drivers license where I used to keep my TN permit. :marathon:

Yeah. My wife still has her North Carolina permit. I don't see how it would be eligible for reciprocity in states requiring a facial ID.

    NC isn't anti-gun, but it doesn't seem pro-gun to
    me.

Meh. Like I said before. It's kind of Schizo. The handgun purchase permit seems anti-gun at first glance, but it's actually a holdover Jim Crow law...and the reason it's held over is because five bucks is five bucks.

On the other hand, it's open carry for people without a concealed carry permit....unlike Tennessee. You can carry a loaded firearm in your car whether or not you have a permit, as long as it's not "concealed" in the case of the former. And if you've got a CCW, no more background checks for a firearm purchase.

On the other-other hand, county and city governments seem to have a lot more say in N.C. than in TN.
