I report one post from a decade ago (which I overlooked at the time) and the moderators go crazy. And I'll say again, as long as a post remains on the board and completely accessible by all the board members why isn't it fair game?

The rule is fine if properly defined, but it isn't. It's a licence to shit on people like Dayton. You know it and I know it. You're all too wrapped up in Dayton's (and others) apparent wrongdoing to actually come up with a just rule. You're tailoring it towards individuals. Come on, I deconstruct rules and laws every day and this one stinks of bullshit.

I'm still not sure I understand as to why it is such a bad thing to set down hard and fast rules. Say a one month time limit on reporting posts. After a month of being unreported it seems reasonable that no one has seen anything offensive or in violation of the rules at that point.

Over the course of the past year or so, there were times when the Report function was being used as an avenue for petty attacks between posters. During that time, the staff would discuss options, but hadn't implemented anything. There was a more recent abuse of the Report function by a group of posters using it as an avenue for petty attacks. This time, discussion became action, and we went ahead and posted the clarified rule that told people not to use the Report function as an avenue for petty attacks against other posters.

You, on the member side, do not see the posters who abuse the Report function.
I, on the Admin/Tech side of things, do see the posters who abuse the Report function, and have seen the abuse of it over the past year or so.

Therefore, going back to the Seussian rhyme I made, "the difference is I know what I know to be actually so" means I actually know about the abuse of the Report function because I have seen it and had to deal with it. You, on the other hand, can only conjecture.

There is no big secret here.

A couple of the abusers remind me of two dogs going in a circle, sniffing each other's asses.

Please provide the numbers and frequency with which the function was abused by each of the alleged offenders.
