What he doesn't get is that ridicule is an essential part of the whole free speech thing. Now, shutting down events and preventing people from speaking (the preferred snowflake method for dealing with speech they dislike) is not.

    Private University.
Isn't the usual song and dance that private institutions' (and, by extension, it's clientele) property rights to invite speakers outweighs any schmuck's right to speak there?

If Pence wants to address a commencement, I figure Trump U could use his prestige.

    Well I do.

But maybe I'm not seeing it because I'm looking from a different perspective. I wasn't afraid of any of the people that came to give speeches when I was in College. Of course, I was usually with other people. Safety in numbers I guess.

The perspective you're looking from is the one fed to you by the right-wing media, who have been circulating this story today with the "feel unsafe" quote. Nobody has said they are scared of Pence. What makes people "feel unsafe" is that by inviting Pence to speak the university appears to endorse some of his more objectionable views, as well as the hateful rhetoric of Trump and his supporters. Even so, the students haven't been afraid to voice their opinions publicly.

Well that goes back to the idea that Colleges are supposed to be places to have your preconceptions challenged. How can colleges do that if they only invite speakers that they "endorse"? If colleges endorsed every speaker they invited, that would be one boring ass college. More like an echo chamber. Is it because it's a commencement speech and not some other sort of speaker?

Except, no, no they have not. You have a few gibbering loons making outlandish comments about how they are just so SCARED of different ideas but the University itself has not univited him.

If I know my Catholic universities, the rule is “Show up at commencement or we’ll withhold your degree.”

He was asked by the administration, not the students.

Right. The administration of a private school. I'm wondering what property rights Pence is violating by giving a speech he was invited to give by agents of said property.

I don't see how they can do that, you've passed all of your classes and have all of the credits and classes required for your degree, but they won't give it to you because you didn't attend the ceremony?

No. They can take their money and go elsewhere, and they can use that fact or some other form of leverage to pressure the administration to change their mind. But yeah...keeping their mouths shut is another option I guess.

That’s how it was done when I attended a Catholic college. [Insert obligatory moronic comment about my age here.] We’ll see how Notre Dame’s administration handles this.

That does make a difference. Students and their families are there to celebrate their accomplishments. For some of the students, Pence being there is like a huge "fuck you" from the university.

Yes, faux news has completely blown things out of proportion to the extent of saying trump is Hitler. It makes their viewers feel like victims and have somewhere thing to whine about even though no one is actually worried pence will bring violence to their campus. I am sure they are protesting as is their right as Americans, and being ing a part of this administration and a generally horrible person pence deserves to be protested. Faux news would rather make shit up than admit people might not care for a religious fascist.

The only special little l e snowflakes are the white professional victims at faux news who complain about the left using their free speech to inform.

Okay, I can buy that. Just to be clear, I'm fine with them bitching and whining. Free speech and all that, and I get students wishing there was another speaker because they don't like the one that was chosen. They want Pence out. That's great. If they want to go the victim culture route, that's great too. I just think it's pathetic. That doesn't mean I think they should be disallowed from going that route. I'm just over here rolling my eyes is all.

Okay, maybe I'm dating myself by doing the "gag me" point my finger at my open mouth thing a little too. But that's it.

It's not in their authority to uninvite him.

They didn't purchase a speaker. They purchased an education which they got.

You also seem to be forgetting about the rest of the students who "paid" for their education and have no issues with Pence.
