Hacked and no way to fix the hack except to change hardware? Yep, expect Sony to step up plans to dump the ps3 for the ps4.
    So what does this mean?
Does this factor into the free psn card numbers thread?

I mean can someone download an trail version and authorize it themselves now?

And what about viruses? Is the ps3 now a ticking time bomb everytime you use it online?

BTW, discussing this at the official ps forums seems to be a ban-able offense.

Well it looks like you don't have to pay for games anymore....

    http://www.ps3-hacks.com/forums/about11207.html

They call it "my backup copy" but it's clear they're just downloading these games.
(and I actually paid money for Tron: Evolution :( )

If what somehow bricks your "older PS3"?

The hacked patch that you can only download on purpose after finding it on the internet yourself, or the non-existent, non-patch that Sony admits they will never be able to make anyway?

Some attempt Sony makes at combatting this. I don't know. The fuck do I look like, some PS3-cracking Algebra superhero?

so dose this mean the ps3 is useless now? just wondering because I was thinking of upgrading my old slab ps3 to a newer slimline one but if this code means it's broken as far as game are concerned maybe I should dust off my old 360

I would have rep'd that but I can't. Rep still won't come up.

    No. Stuff still works fine.

    Here's what this means...

    1. Never-ending weekly firmware updates.

Someone said Sony can't fix this but they can make the hack difficult to use by tweaking the software. So they will. Then the hackers will find a way around that tweak. Sony will update the tweak again. Hackers will find another way around. Sony will update again. And so on and so.... The problem can't be fixed so the merry-go-round will just keep spinning.

    2. Sony will step up plans to dump the ps3.

Sony will now view the ps3 as a flawed system. If nothing else it's a matter of pride. They don't want their flagship system to be compromised. Adding in piracy and homebrew games (which Sony hates - the system only stays afloat if people are buying the software titles) and I promise you there are 12 executives sitting in a room right now planning a launch date for the ps4.

    3. Piracy is going to be out of control.

It looks like you can play ps3 games for free right now. But you have to roll back to an earlier version of the firmware and you have to download a few programs. But now with the master code out there all that may be in the past. I'm not sure how this all works, but it seems you may be able to download whatever game you want (perhaps even psn games) and play them without going through a hundred different steps. And Sony can't stop it. Remember the system only works if people keep buying the $60 titles.

If you bothered to read the article, they can't fix this, not without redesigning the PS3 hardware.

So I'm guessing that this means that you can copy ps3 games and they'll run or something? :smoking: Does this mean the ps3 will drop dramatically in price?

No. See my above remarks about Sony and pride.

To slash the price would mean to admit that there is a problem and risk losing customer confidence in future projects.

Expect the company tow line to be "The PS3 is rock solid" while they quickly and quietly step up ps4 plans.

Not to mention that the new PSP2 is supposed to be just as powerful as a ps3. So the ps3 might get quietly pushed in the corner while Sony pushes its advertising toward the upcoming psp2. Of course if they roll out their new psp too soon they're probably going to have a mess of problems there too.

Hmmm... I think some people at Sony are probably getting fired.

From what I've read, there are some measures that game developers could use to encrypt their own software... This us why Modern Warfare 2 is getting raped while Black Ops is pretty much stable. Xbox can detect hacked software or modified consoles on XBLA and PSN is considering using similar technology.

But yeah, it's time to consider the PS4 because this problem won't go away until then. There will be a substantial minority of people who will employ this hack and mist if them will be rooted out soon enough.

Sure, why not? All the games are free now.

I don't know enough to really weigh in, but does software encryption matter if you control the ps3's master code?

    Who? You mean these people...
    http://www.ps3-hacks.com/
...who have been doing this so long they've got their own community website?

If it really becomes this easy to play free games then it's going to spread like wildfire. No high-schooler or college kid will pay for a game again.

The PS3 will have to survive on the adult marketplace.

Oddly I don't mind paying for stuff from Sony (except HOME items). My ps3 has certainly been worth every dime I paid for it.

This article here plus the fact that Call of Duty Black Ops as well as older titles like Call of Duty World At War are invulnerable to this PS3 hack. Obviously, Treyarch is doing something that Infinity Ward had not.

I think that it's a bit funny that in the end, Treyarch did something better than IW and that means their games are still being played.

No but the upcoming psp2 is a better question. It's supposed to be as powerful as a ps3, I wonder if it also shares it's engineering flaws.

The psp1 can probably be cracked, I just don't think there's a large enough group of people working on it. It's not like you can say "I only cracked it because Sony locked out 'Other OS' support", if you hack the psp it's for straight up piracy, nothing else.

You're forgetting the compulsion people have to sticking Android on anything and everything. Can't do that without cracking the device.
