‘Let them play ball,’ parents say of school’s ball ban

What's next? Respirators? Body Armor? How will schools protect every single student from every single injury or threat?

Honestly, I'd be more worried about sharp pencils. They could put an eye out.

Reminded me of the ADHD thread and worries about overmedicating. Boys, in particular, can be full of energy and just need some play time to burn it off. Removing their balls is almost surely going to guarantee an even sharper rise in the need to [-]tranquilize[/-] medicate these kids.

I think the soft, Nerf-style only rule was in effect in my elementary school.

Getting a concussion from a soccer ball is pretty extreme.

Well good, without ball sports, kids will FIND ways to hurt each other.

Hey, kids, busted up pencil boxes make good shivs.
    Get crackin.

WTF? I have literally broken bones from a point-blank frisbee launch.
Somewhere in my photo albums I have a pic on me wearing a camoflage cast.

One of the Middle Schools in my town gives out birth control pills to the 11, 12 qnd 13 year old girls. But dodge ball? Geeze, someone could get hurt. But at least they won't get any STDs, or even pregnant! Make that school board disapear and get a new one. Maybe the new ones will get the hint.

The school is kindergarten thru eighth grade.

The school has a grass field, 70 yards by 35 yards, with a soccer goal.

You can see it on Google Maps, "Earl Beatty Toronto".

Kids should be outside, playing ball, at recess.

We played Murder Ball when I was in school. That's Dodge Ball, where you aim for the head.

    And we all survived.

I had a few baseballs and softballs taken away when I was in grade school. All they would let us use were those goofy "mushballs" that didn't go very far. :(

In Elementary school, our Gym cunt...er.. teacher had a version of dodge ball where we were lined up against the brick wall of the school and could only shuffle side to side to try and avoid being hit by the ball throwers.

Hurt like fuck when the red rubber ball was winged at you as hard as the fucker could and slammed you into the wall, too.

We also had pillow polo where we beat the everliving fuck out of each other with nerf bats chasing a nerf ball inside the gym. Slamming into each other, slamming into walls, tripping people and falling on the concrete floors.

Crab soccer... sitting on the floor and moving around on your hands and feet...like inverted crawling...with an absolutely enormous ball that was almost as big as we were and we could only use our feet or head to keep the ball in the air or try to score.

We loved that evil shit. Sure beat running the track. Kids are getting more and more coddled and less and less able to deal...with anything. It's truly a shame.

I never got hit, I was damned good.
I had that Remo Williams deal where I could see what the kid was gonna throw.

I've got two words for this school:

lawn darts: those balls don't seem so scary now, do they?

concussion from a soccer ball? Sounds like a bullshit claim for a pathetic lawyer to take up. Don't people bounce them off of their heads?

We had a set called Jarts. They were not sharp to stick in you but would stick in the ground.

I miss my old lawn dart set. The funny thing is a year from now the same school administration will be wringing its hands over all the fat kids they've got.

The next thing you know, kids will be riding bikes WITHOUT HELMETS!!! :ohnoes:

Reminds me when I was a boy and my dad would drive up Interstate 75 in Ohio at 80 MPH- with me STANDING on the front seat. :soma:

I can't imagine normal bike riding with a helmet. I would have felt like a complete ass.

And we rode bikes in the woods, gullys, streams, dirt roads, fields, down embankments...all over creation and not a stitch of protective gear. Had lots and lots of scabs, bruises, scrapes and minor injuries but you barely noticed 'em as a kid. I don't know how much road rash I had from pitching over my handlebars or my pantleg would suddenly catch in my chain causing a sudden stop I'd end up sliding across tar.

    Damn...childhood was fun!! :diacanu:

You assume all kids are even allowed to have recess anymore. :jayzus:

This shit is fucking stupid. I've gotten beamed right in the face by a soccer ball or two, and guess what happened? Nothing. I shook it off, and moved on.

Fuck, is there anything kids can do anymore?

HA! One of my early childhood memories:

we lived on a gravel street (not a road but a street in a suburb, not uncommon back in the day, and we were spitting distance from Chicago). One day my big sister wiped out in the loose gravel and tore her leg up pretty bad.
My parents had to scrub it with a stiff brush and iodine, and my sister went apeshit crazy from the substantial pain!
