Anyone fancy a game of online scrabble? The way it works is a little different to normal scrabble, but it's pretty simple. Basically, all of the players work from the same rack of tiles, competing to find the best word each time. One person (call him Spider) is designated to run the game. It runs like this: Spider draws tiles from a bag such that there are seven in the rack. Spider posts the list of letters. Everyone tries to find the best scoring word they can, which they PM to Spider. They must include its position! After the deadline has passed, Spider posts everyone's responses, along with a picture of the current board. Players score whatever their word was worth. Illegal submissions score zero. Non-submissions score the same as the lowest score. The highest-scoring word goes on the board. If there's a tie, the most popular word goes on. If there's still a tie, a coin is flipped. Loop back to 1, until there are no more tiles. No computer assistance!
Okay, since no-one has disagreed, we'll stick with the SOWPODS word list. Feel free to look up the word lists online. No scrabble software, though! First deadline is Midnight Tuesday going into Wednesday, GMT. That'll give people time to get into the swing of things. I'd like to try to do a new rack every day once we get things going. Also remember that I need the word, the position of the word and the score. First rack: D Blank E O A N E
Here is a picture of a board. Let's imagine for a moment that I made the word "SILLY" as an opener. I would send the following to the judge: SILLY Horizontal (Just because I feel like it) S on the centre square. Y lands on the double letter score. Score = 24 = 2 x ( 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2x4 ) Giving the score just makes life slightly easier for the judge--it's not that important. Position doesn't matter a huge amount right now, but it'll matter a great deal later on.
If "Silly "was the highest scoring word, it would go on the board, and we would draw another 5 tiles.
mm, dunno if I have time to do this... but ehm, how do I know which letter has which value? I don't have scrabble at home I'll look on the web. Found scrabble rules and letter values here

Yes, but you don't get the effects of the previously used double/triple letter/word scores. I can't really play while I'm taking other people's submissions. I'll play next time, and someone else can judge.
Quick rules clarification for everyone: blank tiles retain the letter they were played with. I'm going to adjust the board to reflect this.
Two questions: 1: why do all words get double value? Is that because they cover the central square? 2. Why did you give me double letter value for the N? I had specified the word to begin at the double letter with the O on the central square, that should give the D double value, and give me 16 points (and a shot at being the selected word) Or am I making a mistake?
The first player on the board allways gets score. Im guessing that to make it fair and since we are all playing with the same tiles, spiders given us all double score.
Standard scrabble rule. Centre square is a double-word score. You're not making a mistake. I did. I apologise. You should have 16 points. I'll amend that. I really should do a redraw on the word selection, too. How does everyone feel about that?
/\ It just means everyone has a different word to work with. I ran a random number generator, assigning DAEMON a 1 in 4 chance of being selected (if you run through the numbers, it means that each word worked out with a 1/4 chance of being selected). It didn't come up, so we stick with OPENED.
thanks for fixing the score. I didn't mean to sound anal about the word though, it doesn't matter which one we choose
Cobalt suggested I make things easier by adding the standard grid coordinates to the map. Cobalt: DROWNED = 2 x (2+1+1+4+1+1+2) = 24 Sunshine: DROWNED = 2 x (2+1+1+4+1+1+2) = 24 Mrs. Albert: WORDED = 2 x (4+1+1+2+1+2) = 22 Zenow: WANED = (3*4) + 1+1+1 + (3*2) = 21 Stallion: WARDEN = 2 x (4+1+1+2+1+1) = 20 Wayno: WANDER = 2 x ( 4+1+1+2+1+1 ) = 20 Lethesoda: Illegal entry = 0 The Commadaunt: No submission = 0 thelurker: No submission = 0 DROWNED is the highest scoring word and goes on the board. Current scores are: 40 Cobalt 38 Mrs. Albert 38 Sunshine 37 Zenow 34 Stallion 30 Wayno 16 thelurker 14 Lethesoda 10 The Commadaunt 10 Latecomers (Latecomers start with the sum of the lowest scores achieved. By the way, I'm shifting the deadline back two hours, to 2am GMT, if that's okay. Trying to process results at 7pm over here is a bit of a nightmare.
