It has been suggested to me that we not use SOWPODS, since it's a huge list and people wind up using weird words as a result of using wordlist lookups.

I suppose an alternative would be to ban the use of wordlists--on the honor system, of course--to keep things sane.

I would like some feedback on this.

I've got nothing against using it--I wouldn't be doing lookups on words I didn't already know anyway.

Yeah I would mind losing the SOWPODS. It's not like I knew the word 'pyet', I went from pye (=pie) and then noticed that one. The plus is that people can add to their vocabulary, the downside is that I wouldn't call most of the two-letter combinations words if my life depended on it. I'd say stick to the honour system and an agreed upon (online?) dictionary to check words for validity... doing it like that would also give more honour to people coming up with stuff like 'agility' and 'tearily'

Personaly I think you should get rid of it. I for one wouldn't use a word I didn't know the meaning of, i think its a bit of a cheat if someone just go's up and down a list like that.

I'm more than happy to change from Sowpods, but we would need another way of checking the validity of words.

You don't get to check yourself in real scrabble, you put a word thats not really one on the board and it gets challenged, you get penalised.

Hmm. It seems to me the main problem is that people should only be using words that they already know. Therefore we should ban the use of wordlists.

On top of that, we can then choose a new dictionary. There are plenty online to choose from, such as www.dictionary.com or www.m-w.com (seems to be down right now). However, you should be aware that these resources also have very extensive word lists.

I agree with you and think you misunderstood what I was saying. What I meant is that we would need a way to check the validity of the word in case it is challenged, e.g an agreed dictionary.

    There's a J in the new rack.
I believe J is worth 8 points, rather than one, as shown above.

I looked in my 1983 Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

Lignite is a type of coal, between peat and bituminous,
    also known as brown coal.
I guess there could be more than one lignite.

I don't care which dictionary we use,
but changing now would alter the game.

I'm using SOWPODS until a decision is made.

As for it changing the game--it won't change it that much. Only one word has been disallowed, and changing the dictionary wouldn't have changed that. Plus all of the words submitted so far would also have been allowed by the likes of dictionary.com.

As I said before, the other online dictionaries have extensive word lists, too. Switching dictionaries won't eliminate "weird words".

 Won't make any difference to me - I only check if there's a challenge. And on that note, I take it that with plurals the rule is that providing the word isn't specified as a mass noun, the plural is accepted?

A potentially controversial decision this time around! :soma:

    Cobalt: JINNS (Down starting at J6) = (3x8)+1+1+1+(3x1) = 30
    faisent: JINNS/JAW (Down starting at J5) = (8+(3x1)+1+1+1) + (8+1+4) = 27
    Mrs Albert: JINNI/JAW (Down starting at J5) = (8+(3x1)+1+1+1) + (8+1+4) = 27
    Sunshine: JIGS = 2x(8+1+2+1) = 24

Im not too sure of how we are defefining proper nouns, but the way i look at jedi is that it is now a recognised religeon- certainly in the UK so no doubt other places too. It's in our census and dictionary. Are you telling me we couldn't have christian (if numbers allowed), jew or hindu??

A proper noun is one that is given a capital letter. I couldn't find a dictionary anywhere that listed it otherwise.

I would be very happy to receive arguments or alternate evidence so that I can take it. I feel like a complete dick disallowing Jedi. :jayzus:

^To be honest, that strengthens the argument for it being a proper noun. I never played a game where Buddhist or Hindu have been allowed, for the same reason.
