About once a year, I consider getting a .357 SIG barrel for my P229, and then I ask myself, "Why do I want to?" and answer, "I don't guess I do." Then a year later it starts over again. It's an itch that I scratch but keeps coming back.

So with a 125 grain bullet, it matches the performance of a 125 grain .357 magnum, but twice +1 as many rounds as in a six shot revolver. The advantage is that it over-penetrates, and the disadvatage is that it over-penetrates. I ask myself, "Why would I want something that shoots through schools?" Then I ask myself, "Why do people carry .357 Magnum revolvers? They shoot through schools too."

So at any rate, it's that time of year again, and before talking myself out of it again, I figured I'd throw it out here.

.357 Sig. What do you think?

.357 SIG? A solution looking for a problem, I sez.

Don't get me wrong; it's a fine cartridge. But why bother, really? A .45 is as good or better as a defensive caliber and a 9mm is much cheaper to shoot. (And I know you already own a .45 and your P229 is either .40 or 9mm.)

I feel the same itch from time to time: like now, I really want to buy one of those FN 5.7mm pistols. But I realize that, beyond the cool factor, they're not very practical.

So that's my advise: resist the urge.

...but a 13 shot .357 Magnum-equivalent is pretty damned cool...

I don't like oddball calibers just on general principle.

You need to be able to supply yourself by raiding the ruins of police stations and military bases to fight the zombie hordes. Stick to the standard calibers they're likely to have in stock.

Besides, if you walk into a bait shop in Bumfuck, TN and ask for .357SIG, Bubba behind the counter's gonna say "Whut kahnda candy-ass faggot caliber is thayt?" and make you buy a box of .45 like God intended man to use.

.357 Sig is exceedingly popular in police circles. In fact, I'd say it's the 4th most popular round.

Really? I'm surprised! I don't hear much about it in the gun mags.

Isn't the .357 SIG supposed to provide the ballistic effect of a .45 ACP in a 9mm-sized cartridge?

    It's approximately equal to a full-house .357 Magnum round.

MAOHS - I'm picking up a .357 magnum revolver within the next few months. You just reminded me of the sig.

Why would I want a .357? The reason, you ask?

These stupid hoods around here are starting to wear body armor. The owner of the building we rent office space in is a Shelby County deputy. He told me lots of these hoods are getting brought in with it on.

The way I see it, if you love your wife, you have you choice but to get this, or a 5.7.

    Do it for love. :D
