Religious folks love to throw around the word "sin" as a means of regulating their moral lives, and a good portion of them use the word to try and regulate the lives of others. But when you get right down to it, does anyone really know what "sin" means? Is it something evil or bad? Is it just a willful disobedience of a a supreme being's laws? Is there another meaning that the rest of us heathens just don't understand? So here's your chance to enlighten us. What exactly is the correct definition of "sin"? Also, should we know if an activity is sinful or not?
"Sin" is whatever your particular moral code says it is. Still, almost every sin is apparently a gray area since God himself commits the same sins he forbids his people to do - it's a wacky scene.
I don't think we can judge "sin" in an absolute way - by definition I assume God can if he exists, we just judge other's impacts or possible impacts on our own lives. Personally I think "sin" is avoidable harm committed on another person, and a good deal of unavoidable harm as well.
You cant move away from somethign that exists in all places equaly. Running from the omnipresent is impossible
It's a metaphor. Hell is the absence of God, and since he is all forgiving, it is through our selfishness, our pride that we refuse to admit our mistakes, beg for his forgiveness, and truly redeem. To sin is to commit acts that we know He frowns upon, and commit them anyway.
http://www.evilbible.com/Murder.htm Okay, here is one link for starters. There are examples of definite "Law of Warfare Vilolations" when God commands his favorite folk to steal the enemies women, kill every male (even civilians) etc. during battle. But hey, it's all for a good cause.
As you only get to talk to your creator after death its a bit unfair to judge people on what happens before death. Wouldnt the whole system work better if god just didnt count any sin that happened on earth but only sin commited in the afterlife?
It is possible to be absent from Him, billions of people close their hearts to Him every day. You're doing it now.
Then we should not have to hear about it from anyone but the "creator." All you lowly mortal humans who presume to tell everyone who is and is not living righteously can just shut the fuck up already.
Sounds like a load of self-fulfilling bullshit to me. If i open my heart to the flying spaghetti monster and feel better afterwards does that means he exists? Or have i just succesfully deluded myself? My heart is open to any god who is prepared to go beyond the idiocy and uselessness of blind faith and is prepared to provide a little proof.
Actuly, how do you not know that its you who is closing your heart to a multitudinal race of many gods?
Am I what? Living righteously, or shutting the fuck up? If the former, yes. Mostly. Good days and bad. But "righteous" according to conscience and reason, not the fairy tales made up by sanctimonious old men who want to tell their neighbors how to live. If the latter, hell no.
Boy, you people are really fucked up. Sin. Its so simple. Jeeez! Knock an old lady down the subway stairs? That's a sin. Steal kids lunch money? That's a sin. Lie to the teacher? That's a sin. Cheat on a test? That's a sin. Killing and murder are one of the major problems. Thou shalt not kill. But in this world we have war. So it gets tricky when you kill in a war.
Guess these baby killers and rapists didn't get the memo...... of wait, they DID get the memo. That Lord really ROCKS! Note to self......don't piss off the Jews. Kill Men, Women, and Children "Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told." (Ezekiel 9:5-7 NLT) More Rape and Baby Killing Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. (Isaiah 13:15-18 NLT)
So is it the Christian standpoint that anything that brings physical pleasure should be considered sinful? They seem to view sex as sinful unless it's for the strict process of procreation, but if it's done simply for pleasure, even between a married couple, it's looked at as sinful. Some sects consider music and dancing sinful, even though Jesus danced at weddings. Others consider drinking sinful, yet Jesus created wine for a wedding so that everyone could party. Most Christians believe that homosexuality is sinful, but yet they have a hard time explaining why, other than because the Bible said so. It's all very confusing to a rational person.
Many are under the impression that religious folks or people of a particular faith follow the bible implicitely. Christians largely deal with the NEW Testament. A whole lot less fire and brimstone. Most Christians take the good and preach that aspect. There is God and Jesus. Christians follow the teachings of Christ. Yes, there is that whole First Testament but the New Testament tries to leave that bad stuff behind.
Its confusing to a person who hasn't taken the time to actually learn about or follow a particular faith.
