    1. It wont last.
    2. As the article you quoted pointed out, this isn't the first time this plot has been used.
    3. As the article you quoted pointed out, it makes sense that a character like Superman needs to be seen as not representing a particular country in order to avoid retaliation.
    4. This isn't a situation where Supermans actions are being depicted as correct and awesome. They've been doing this storyline where he's confused and indecisive and unsure of his place in the world for a while now, ever since he watched New Krypton blow up.
    5. As an alien that landed in America as a baby, Superman was never really a US citizen.
6, Presumably, Clark Kent didn't renounce his citizenship.

    Hmmm...
Supe's address/residency is kind of questionable anyways.

As long as we have Captain America we'll be ok. Still a stupid fucking sign of the Smerica hate by so many ignorant Anericans today.

Sad that the writers at DC see Obama as so pathetic that Superman has to renounce his honorary citizenship...

Whereas if McCain had won, Supes would have been deported as an illegal alien.

To give Fred Thompson his due, he at least would have granted him amnesty, but only under the condition that no other Kryptonians be allowed in.

False. Superman was granted honorary US citizenship early on, and Clark Kent's citizenship is established by adoption.

Well, I suppose TPTB deemed him as worthy as the other seven, despite the number of times he's been framed by various evil nemeses over the years.

It's a comic book. Who cares? If anything at all, Bear's got this one right.

That's actually somewhat the way things went in the last couple years' Krypton Reborn storyline. I'll not bore you with the details, but suffice to say the Earth people's view was "One Superman = :techman: many super Kryptonians = :calli: "

In reference to the link Jamie gave us, I think it's a mischaracterizing of Superman. Supes has long been seen as a global force for good within DC continuity, not necessarily an American agent. He happens to be based in Metropolis, in the USA, but he has a very long history of helping people all over the world. Tho it was suggested in a couple stories that Superman mainly dealt with the northern hemisphere, and the Martian Manhunter (who had Superman-level powers) performed a similar function in the south.

 Exactly. I wonder, was "truth, justice, and the American way" used in the comics prior to the Fifties TV version, or was that added to pacify the McCarthyites?

Huh. Now, *that* I didn't know. :techman:

Actually, I think the "Truth, justice and the American Way" bit originated on the old Superman radio show? Dickynoo, is that right?

I don't disagree, but who's getting upset over this?

I've always thought that comics were a diversion, a bit of a guilty pleasure. It seems pretentious, maybe even contrived, when they start weighing in heavily and obviously on any such issue. It's a given that comics and superheroes have always been little morality tales, riffs on some basic themes. When they start politicking, they're sucking out the fun. (See the film, "Superman IV")

I didn't see the second Iron Man movie, but the first one was a great example of what comics should be. They didn't have to slap anyone in the face with the message, and yet, they got a point across while remaining entertaining.

At the very least, this was clumsy and ham-handed. The writers could have gotten the same message across through a thought-provoking story arc instead of editorializing in a single panel.
