I'm all for putting the most-used on the first screen. I only have a few memorized, have a bitch of a time finding the ones I don't usually use. My most-used are:
I use these all the time, and have them memorized: I use these a lot, but do not necessarily have them memorized ickle::juggle: :slice:low: Plus any/all of the ones on the Celebrations page, of which there really aren't THAT many.
We should definitely group some of the standard smileys together, like etc. But here are the ones I most commonly use or see commonly used broken down by categories: Politics and Debate :nobible: Mockery and Insults Emotions Signs (there are a few I use/see used in the Giant category, but I think it's good to leave them alone in there since there aren't very many) Miscellaneous Couldn't figure out which category this one is in:
Oh, keerist... Okay... Politics and debate :lookinthemirror: Mockery and insults :lookatme: :kissass: oke: (fuck yeah) :rubberroom: Emotions :flow2: :squee: :smarm: (duh!) (Pretty much the classics there) Violent :fuckoff: :catfight:  (for UA vs Garamet pyramids, dunno how relevant that is anymore) Naughty :dildo: Celebrations :sip: :hb: Giant Miscellaneous (a classic that oughtta be in emotions) :tantrum: And...that's it.
The easiest solution is for Diacanu to kill himself. Oh and keep that one... And the yes one, keep that. Whoa that just went full circle.
Okay, time for an updated alphabetical list. I even added one to the list that no one had yet suggested, but that I thought of while sorting these out. It is left as an exercise to the student to discover which one it is... : ) ; ) : ( : ? : : $ : : alpha : : async : : aurora : : baba2 : : backhug : : bailey : : banana : : bananana : : bang : : bash : : beatnik : :beatnik: : beck : : bed : : bergman : : bigass : : blink : : blush : : borg : : brood : : brokeback : : bullshit : : bump : : busheeep : : calli : : catfight : :catfight: : chili : : chris : : chris2 : : clang : : clap : : clyde : : cool : : corn : : crickets : : cry : : cylon : : D : damnkids : : dancer : : dayton : : dendroica : : devil : : diablo : : diacanu : : diaf : : dildo : :dildo: : doh : : drama : : drool : : droolingidiot : : drunk : : drunkfriends : : dual : : effort : : eh : : ehrie : : elflat : : elwood : : enlistedperson : : enty: : ep2 : : evidence : : evilpop : : facepalm : : fan : : fantasyworld : : finger : : fireworks : flow : : flow2 : :flow2: : frog : : fuckoff : :fuckoff: : fun : : gafom : : garamet : : gay : : geezer : : goalposts : : godwin : : hail : : happydance : : happytears : : hb : :hb: : horse : : huh : : hurr : : indifferent : : irony : : irregardless : : itsokay : : j : : jayzus : : jester : : juggle : :juggle: : kissass : :kissass: : krieg : : lalala : : lanz : : lick : : lol : : lookatme : :lookatme: : lookinthemirror : :lookinthemirror: : mad : : marathon : : matt : : meka : : midnightsuicide : : mob : : moon : : mrsa : : muad : : muad2 : : munch : : music : : nana : : nautica : : nelsonhaha : : neroon : : nick : :nick: : no : : nobible : :nobible: : nono : : notthisshit : : nuts :  : nyer : : ohnoes : : Oooo : : P : pathead : : PGT : : pickle : ickle: : pissed : : plow : low: : polarslam : : polarslam2 : : Poke : oke: : Pope : : proveit : : prufrock : : punchhard : : pwease : : ramen : : rant : : repost : : rimshot : : rofl : : rolleyes : : rotfl : : roundabout : : rubberroom : :rubberroom: : salute : : sarek : : science : : scorp : : seriousbusiness : : shades : : shakefist : : shakes : : shep : : shitstorm : : shock : : shrug : : sick : : sigh : : sip : :sip: : slice : :slice: : smarm : :smarm: : smitten : : smooch : : sniper : : sob : : soholy : : sokar : : soma : : spit : : spock : : squee : :squee: : storm : : strawman : : tantrum : :tantrum: : tardwords : : tasvir : : techman : : technobabble : : thelurker : : think : : tinfoilhat : : tits : : TKO : : tp : : turd : : twocents : : ua : : ualbert : : unsure : : unuts : : vaderbattle : : vomit : : voodoo : : waiting : : walz : : washyourass : : waving : : weep : : whacko : : what : : whoa : : whoopdedoo : : wtf : : wtfturn : :wtfturn: : wub : : X : : yays : : yeehaw : : yes : : yes2 : : yoda : : yuck : : zod : : zodiac : : zzz :
I still maintain that most of them don't have to "go." They don't need to be on the first page of "most used smilies" but I still think it's very handy for the board to have a large number of them that can be used when wanted. The big problem is accessibility. "Alphabetical order" is nice, but sometimes there is no relationship between the name of a smilie and its meaning, especially to newbies. Who but an old-time insider would think of : the lurker : when looking for a smilie like ? I'm still thinking that, once we have a good list of those various posters use, there ought to be a poll for all of them, where you can vote for as many as you want, that simply asks: "Which ones should be on the page of most used smilies?" The 60 or 80 that get the most votes go there. As of now, 226 smilies have been listed as being used by various posters. Which shows those saying to cut the list to 20 or so and simply eliminate all the rest "that nobody uses" were off by a whole order of magnitude. Perhaps there could be a page of "most used smilies" and a second page of "other common smilies". 60 or so on each. All the rest go on other pages sorted, as much as possible, by category. (For many of them, it wouldn't be a problem, because the nature of them makes it real easy to figure out which page to look on for them if you want one. On the extremely rare occasions I want to use a smilie from the "violent" page, for example, I know exactly where to go looking for it, and can find it in a big hurry.)
I think you need to make some VBA code to go over the database and find out which ones are actually used the most. I don't think it would take too long if you have a good internet connection and access to all the threads.
years ago, when I claimed the smiley as my own I did so with the knowledge that it wasn't an important smiley and probably wouldn't get used that much, but it would still be mine. As much as Wordforge is kind of mine because I've hung out here from time to time as me. So, I'd be upset if was gone away with completely...I don't care if its not part of the normal "these are the smilies we have" batch that everyone sees, but I'd be sad if ceased to be. Other than that, I maybe use and from time to time but only because they're awesome.
To be clear...this is not about getting rid of anything at all, though I have been weeding some out on occasion. This is about what should be on the default page, which we probably don't want excessively large since the point is to make it easy for people who don't want to comb the smilies for their favorites. So no need to try and save anything, since nothing is going. Just what ones are the most used and useful.
There are a good number I use, including: : beamcannon : : bick : :bick: I've seen beamcannon used; to my knowledge, I'm the only one that's used the thread jacked one. Both are useful, compared to a few I've seen in the collection, but if they aren't really used...
I'd recommend going back through all the smilies and and renaming some or most of them to match their actions.
And while we're at it: Would it be possible to standardize the name that appears when you hover over a smilie in someone's post, so that it is always exactly what you have to type in to get it? As it is now, some are exact, some are close, some aren't even in the ballpark. For example: : ), which gives as a smilie, shows you just what to put in there. : (, which gives as a smilie, shows "Sad" when you hover over it. That's no big deal when you're talking about smilies that common, but for many others it's kind of ridicuous. : bailey: () shows you exactly what you need to type in. : cry : () shows "Cry" (without the colons--and not all of them have colons at both ends). : bergman : () shows "Death." Personally, I get inspired a lot by seeing what others use, but how can I remember what it is if I can't see the code by hovering over it? I have to "quote" the post, look at the details, then back out of there. Kind of ridiculous. This might make a fair amount of "busy work," but I think it would already help to make the smilies more useable.
