I agree. If the point was to put a Klingon on the ship, then put a fucking Klingon on the ship.

    Gorch and all.

I'll have to disagree here, Wesley was written and handled horribly by the show-runners & writing staff. If nothing else, Wil's work in Stand By Me shows he had the chops, but, like most of the TNG crew, except for Data, he got crap to work with.

You're right, the writing was crap and a major reason why the character didn't work. I thought about editing my post just to add that in.

See now I'd say that was more Brent Spiner's acting ability than better writing.

Oh, I'll readily concede that. But you have to admit, the writers more or less ignored everyone but Picard and Data. That's their perogative, obviously, but don't do that and then claim you're writing an ensemble show.

Has anyone picked Commander MacDuff? I hate when they just drop in a new main character and expect us all to just go along with it.

No; my post was a joke of sorts. It references an episode called Conundrum, where everyones' memory was wiped and the aliens behind the plot created the persona of Commander MacDuff to infiltrate and attempt to control the actions of the crew. I was pretending to take him seriously as a real character that the creators just plopped in.

Though, he did suck and he is one of my least favorite characters.

Funny story, that joke didn't come out of nowhere... I had stopped watching The Next Generation for a good bit and that was the first new episode that I saw when I got back into it. Not knowing what had happened in recent shows, I actually thought that he was a real character for the first 1/3 of the episode.

Huh. 'Cos IIRC, in the first season, Geordi was a helmsman and they had some Scottish engineer. I'm not imagining that, am I? I remember him in maybe one scene. Picard asked him something and he had the onscreen charisma of wet toast. That's the last I remember of him.

Lt. Commander Argyle? He was in two episodes but they decided to make Geordi the chief engineer in season 2.

That episode, as a whole, was probably the best episode she was in, but it also had her single most annoyingly, over the top shrieky scene (the "60" speech) in Star Trek history, no small feat that.

There were a string of chief engineers in the first season. In The Naked Now, the first of many TNG episodes to blatantly rip off TOS episodes, the chief engineer was a middle aged woman.

Yep. In 'The Naked Now,' it was MacDougal. Then it was Argyle for a few episodes ('Where No One Has Gone Before,' 'Datalore'). Next Logan ('The Arsenal of Freedom'). Finally Geordi.

I liked Logan best. He was an asshole and brought some much-needed conflict.

Edit: I forgot Leland T. Lynch--who had the oddball habit of saying his full name when responding to the commlink--from the episode 'Skin of Evil.'
