I don't see anything in his recent posts that would necessitate such a thing.

He started posting Egypt/Cleopatra threads in the Red Room again after he was repeatedly told not to.

Since it irritated people and he knew it irritated people, I'm calling it trolling. I gave him a full warning and that triggered an automatic ban.

Up to Lanz, but since Starguard didn't commit any of the unforgivable sins, I imagine he'll be back after an understanding is reached...

Not to nitpick, but flaming and trolling isn't against the rules of the red room.

As long as the spammage issue was made perfectly clear in previous warnings, he made his bed.

Starguard was here. You were gone. Now, as soon as Starguard is banned you're not only back, but agitating for his release.

    Elementary, my dear Watson! :chris:

I can't believe I'm doing this but I thought that, too. I thought annoying people (within some common-sense limits) was one of the beauties of the RR.

I can tolerate the normal spamming of the RR, but when half of page 1 is Starguard's mind-numbingly senseless Cleopatra or Egyptian crap, yeah, something needs to be done.

Something was done, remember? We got the "thread ignore" hack installed.

If we're going to start banning people for being annoying within the confines of the Red Room, this place is going to empty out pretty quick.

Technically speaking, I don't think Startard did anything wrong with putting GR threads in the Red Room. He could've easily called someone a pedo and kept it in the RR.
He didn't bother me, because he was on ignore.

But Lanzman is going to have to make a decision as to what he wants his board to be. When people go out and advertise this place to other forums, and people come here, are they going to be turned away by the inane stupidity filling up the first page of the most active forum? Is that going to hurt or help people deciding whether they want to stay?

I like the freedom to post how I want, and it's the main reason I still come here and why other places are garbage. So yeah, freedom to post inane threads is what makes this place great. But if a poster's main purpose is to come here and make this place look stupid, and make half the forum topics look like they were started by a Down's Syndrome sufferer, then I think that's something that maybe needs to be looked into. Same goes with Baba threads.

Overall, I think what should've happened is the mods should've just moved his threads into the Green Room. When The Flashlight started threads in the Red Room when they should've been in Media Central, they just got moved. He didn't get warnings that triggered a ban. Isn't that what mods are for? Maybe it can get annoying, but we've got quite a lot of mods.

Pretty sure Stargard and Baba have been put on the chopping block for the same reasons before, but we were definitely told then, that those things were not bannable.

I don't care one way or another either, just wondering if we're pulling a CBS.

The thing is, if a moderator tells you to stop doing something or you'll get a warning, you have several choices:

    1. Stop doing it, and possibly get clarification from someone on what the problem is or how to avoid doing it.
    2. Keep doing it.
    3. Try to persuade the moderator that you should be left alone.
    4. Complain to an administrator, if you think the moderator is not reflecting board policy.
    5. Try to get any relevant board policies changed.

For whatever reason, Starguard evidently has chosen #2. He's now faced with the consequences of his decision.

People should not be deliberately causing a lot of work for volunteer mods to handle. It's not nice, it's not helpful, and it makes the task of moderating even less attractive for everyone, both the "right" and "wrong" kinds of people you'd want as mods.

If you're doing it in the Red or the Gray Room, and it's not "extreme" trolling" or breaking the personal information rule, then you should be able to tell the moderator to go fuck themselves.

Unless I missed the memo about apostle selling Wordforge to Lisa, which is always a possibility. I've been working a lot lately.

And I can tell you from experience that just because the staff doesn't jump to do whatever Zombie says it doesn't mean that we don't listen...it just means that we often don't agree with what Zombie says. :)

For what it's worth I wouldn't have given a warning for this action, and there are many on staff who wouldn't. However one thing that makes Wordforge good is that we try to operate on common sense rather than an encyclopedic set of rules, which means different mods will sometimes behave differently. It is certainly worth saying when you disagree with actions though.

Umm, am I the only one seeing the problem in the way different staff deal with the same issues here? It should not be "some mods will give warnings while others don't". Because that leads down the path to inconsistent modding and mods playing favorites.

Yes, we understand the common sense part, but for warnings, they should be handled on a more consistent set of what constitutes a warning and what doesn't.

Anyways, I think this would be a bigger issue if the poster in question wasn't widely despised among both the staff and the membership, so I think I'll stop arguing this one. He's gone, and I can't say it makes me sad.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. You have to have a fair set of rules. This protects both sides of the equation - the mods, and the posters. Where you set the rules defines actions. People really are just like children - put no fence out, and they'll stay in the middle of the playground. Put a fence up, and they'll go right to the fence, as far away from the center (or "right") as they can.

So, is your fence far out? Or is your fence no fence?
