Winchester. Anything else would be slap in John Moses Browning's face. If you really wanted to be a man, you'd buy an 1886 Winchester.
Also let it be known that I currently own a .45LC SAA and reload, but not yet in that caliber. Am leaning toward that caliber in a lever-action.
that Henry Big Boy is also available in 45LC. I'm not wild about the name, but I have one in .44Mag and think the world of it.
Yeah, I saw it's now on the discontinued line at the Winchester website. If I can't find it at a gun show and see how it handles, then I guess it's out. Still open for other options, though.
From what I saw in the current 'American Rifleman,' it looks like Mossberg is now making Winchester-pattern lever-action rifles. Edit: Yes, they are, but so far only in .30-30 caliber. Linkage
I used to have a Marlin 30-30. I've heard (probably bullshit) that the Marlin has tighter rifling than a Winchester. Regardless, it was a good weapon.
I have a Winchester '94, and I love it to death. Wouldn't trade it for anything. I would have to suggest... ...The Marlin. With the side eject, it's just more versitile.
When I can, but put of production guns only go up in value, never down. Shit, I just saw a Colt M1991A1 with the parkerized finish. that gun went out of production a few years back, although you can still get it in stainless steel or blued, and the price was 200 bucks more than the currently produced ones.
http://www.jbcustom.com/new-mares.htm I'm wondering if this counts as a short barreled rifle or not...
I prefer the '92, it's smaller and lighter. of course it's only available as replicas, and only in pistol cartridges. But I loooooves mine in .44 mag. I'm also quite fond of my 1886 replica in .45-70. It's quite painful on both ends.
I would like to purchase a lever action .44 magnum, but I have a couple of evil "assault rifles" to buy prior to the next president taking office.
All my lever guns are Marlins. With or without optics, side eject is just better. I've had two of the little ported 16" barreled .44Rem Mag carbines (no longer in production). I sold the first one and regretted it ever since. I bought another one and will never, ever turn lose of it. It was my all-purpose truck gun before the one I use now. My current truck gun is an older Marlin 1895GS (Guide-gun stainless) in .45-70Govt. It's got the short 18.5" barrel. I say it's an older one because the barrel is ported and, for some ungodly reason, Marlin stopped porting their big-bore barrels three or four years ago. Here are those two, just cause I had a picture already on my HDD from another thread: I've got some others, but they're mainly in .45LC or the exceedingly common but effective .30-30.
God bless Wal*Mart. They had some sub $600 laptops when I was there the other day too. HP, no less. And I don't recall, but a quick glance seemed to indicate they were a decent value at that price.
I've been on the telephone with Marlin's tech people so much, not only do they know me by name, they've sent me their engineering tables so I won't be bugging them all the time.
I'm really starting to lean toward the Mossberg. While it is in 30-30 and not the 45LC I was originally interested in, it's not like I plan on entering any SASS competitions. It would also be a more versatile cartridge should I ever want to hunt with it. I only have one rifle at current - my AR15. Might take a trip to the gun show next weekend and see if I can handle one.
There is something noble and pure about stalking deer in the frozen woods of Wisconsin, armed with a 30-30 '94.
You bet! That's how I started in the 70's (frozen woods in Northern Wisconsin). Almost all our nighbors used 30-30 also. Great whitetail weapon for thick woods and short/medium range shooting.
