    Excellent points.

People forget that a movie normally has to bring in at the box office roughly THREE times its production budget before it makes a profit.

Consider that and the AbamsTrek movie was the one of the LEAST successfull Star Trek movies.

People forget? Jesus christ man. You call yourself a teacher? A movie makes a profit if it exceeds it's production budget. Full stop. Where the hell did you get three times from?

It may need to be a significant profit to justify a sequel, but profit per se is measured in on simplu exceeding it's budget.

Those figures can't be compared properly unless you adjust them for inflation.

    You didn't know this?

The production budget is paid solely by the studio that produces the movie.

Paramount in the case of Star Trek.

    But.

The studio DOES NOT receive 100% of the box office that a movie takes in.

The studio receives about one third of the box office. The theatres received a big chunk as do various other parties.

Wrong. The latest movie was a co-production with funding coming from several places.

You're missing the point buddy boy. You said that in order for a movie to make a profit it has to make three times it's budget. There was no comment about who gets the money. You were talking about a singular product. Ergo, in order for a movie to make a profit it simply needs to exceed ity's budget, irrespective of who gets the money.

Again, you shouldn't be a teacher if you can't speak in plain and clear English. Look up the word "profit" in the dictionary.

    Actually, not true.
Don't forget marketing and advertising cost after production has wrapped. I think Green Lantern's advertising budget was 100 million. That's on a 200 million dollar production. So you can see that cost continue to skyrocket after the cameras are turned off.

The advertising budget is part of the overall budget is it not?

Nope. Advertising budget is not part of the production costs.

I guess you missed me statement just after that about only a few rabid fan bois gushing over it. All five of them were over at the TBBS, while all the rest of the fans had already recognized that B&B were pissing all over the franchise and had little to no hope that a new Trek show would be any good.

It's amazing to see the amount of time, effort, and passion that Dayton wastes into trying to convince the rest of us that a movie we all agree was good actually sucked.

    I'm still right.

The people that spend the money to produce the movie DO NOT receive but about one third of the Box Office figures.

Thus, when you hear that a movie had a "120 million dollar box office" it is a good bet that the studio that produced it made about 40 million give or take.

Look it up if you doubt me.

If I and a couple of others say the movie sucked, then you can't very well maintain that "we all agree was good".

As for majorities agreeing on something.

IIRC, two and a half years ago, a majority of voting Americans thought electing Barack Obama was a good idea.............

The most recent Star Trek movie actually has a lot in common with Barack Obama.

All flash and fun, nonthreatening, easy on the eyes but no depth or substance whatsoever.

Another thing that most people will want to forget in 20 years.

Whilst I agree with you the the movie won't stand the test of time, the fact is that people liked it, they went to see it and they said good things about it, as did the critics. As a result it raked in a ton of money.

Unfortunately for you, whatever bullshit you peddle, the movie ultimately was a success. Time to deal with it my friend.

    I am dealing with it.

By dealing out the criticism the movie deserves but so many others are reluctant to mention.

Once again, the fact that Star Trek "fans" can't talk about HOW GOOD the movie supposedly is without talking about the box office speaks volumes about their desire to be considered popular.

In order of quality in my opinion from best to worst:

    1) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    2) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    3) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

I consider the above three to be "good" movies both generally and in Trek terms.

    4) Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    5) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
    6) Star Trek: First Contact
    7) Star Trek- Abrams Reset

I consider the above four to be "average" to "below average" movies.

    8) Star Trek: Nemesis
    9) Star Trek: Generations
    10) Star Trek: Insurrection
    11) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

I consider the above four to be crap of varying degrees.

I'm a Star Trek fan who likes the movie and thinks it's good (not "great") and I've never once talked about the box office take. :bailey:

And I have less desire to be "considered popular" than even you do.

If you are willing to dismiss Star Trek V simply as "crap" then you aren't the steadfast lover of TOS that you claim to be.

So, nobody can talk about it in anything other than box office take.....yet the post you are replying to says more than just box office take.

Why are you not reading the posts you are replying to?

Look, you lknow full well I have problems with the movie. But that doesn't mean we can get away from the fact that is was a success.

In some ways I wish it wasn't so that we could go back to the prime universe, But that reality is it was, You are just going to have to get used to that.

However bad you think the movie was it is, ultimate, what we have now as Star Trek.
