They should release some publicity shots already... With the actors in character with full costume and makeup...
I don't think they are ready to deal with the barrage of comments from either side for the movie. I think they are purposely being secretive so that going into the movie the focus isn't on their choice of actors persay and rather force people to wait until it closer to the release of the movie. Have they completed principal photography for the movie, does anyone know?
Care to answer the question? Does something have to be "original" to avoid being "shit"? I think the answer is an OBVIOUS "no", or everything we have today is clearly "shit" since NOTHING is original these days.
I'm pretty sure they have. If you remember, the movie was originally to be released only four months from now.
I do remember the original release date. But, there is the possibility that part of the reason for changing the release date might be due to problems with principal photography.
I'm not sure how much originality there is anymore in Hollywood storytelling. Time travel is certainly not new to Trek. It was done in Trek IV, it was done in Generations, it was done in First Contact, it was the theme of a bunch of TNG episodes. Honestly, it's all about the execution. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, but if it's written well, if the production values are top notch, if it's edited and directed competently, then it should at the very least be entertaining. Abrams has produced competent entertainment up to this point. Nothing earth-shattering (except perhaps season one of Lost). Mission Impossible III was perfectly servicible as summer entertainment. Cloverfield was well-made, although I hated the first-person videocam conceit.
Because of the writers strike, they weren't allowed to make changes to the script while shooting. I remember reading a quote from Abrams saying that he was frustrated becasue there was dialogue and other things he would have changed, but he wasn't allowed.
That is what some of have said. I'd say it had to do more with the writers strike than anything else. It is laughable that even Paramount would be stupid enough to believe that this movie will be a "blockbuster". You seem to have kept up more with its status than I have. Thanks for a different perspective.
I like the way the actors look. Spock, bang on! Uhura, awesome! Kirk, I'll have to reserve judgment till I see his hair, but he looks pretty close to me. And Eric Bana looks badass as a Romulan. However, the movie poster sucks. Like We Are Borg said, it's completely unoriginal. In fact, it looks like a high school kid with a Photoshop hobby did it. The way they cut off the sides and the top of the Trek logo is very abrupt and hard on the eyes. I don't mind the different color concepts, and that is the only kinda neat thing they did. Uhura's picture needs more contrast, and looks like a stock photo compared to the other more clear pics of Nero, Spock, and Kirk. Also, the font just looks off. And it wouldn't have hurt to increase the letter size. All in all, it just doesn't follow good design elements.
That is kind of insulting. To high school students that is. I think many hs students could come with something far more creative and interesting.
I have spock's corner as my desktop background. He looks better than the other 3 by far! but, yeah, I agree with Scorp. A simple cutout with the pen tool of the logo would make that look so much better. The edges do look stupid cut off.
The whole damn concept. That's not Kirk. That's not Spock. That's not Uhura. This is the first time we've seen photos of the people cast as the characters we've known for 40 years, and I'm not buying it. It already looks like they're playing dress up. Really, I've just had it with Hollywood fucking up what was already fine to begin with because they have absolutely no imagination. This didn't need to be done. It's going to flop. Star Trek needed about a 10 year break because of the damage done from the shitfests known as Voyager and Enterprise.
I do hope you're right. But if it doesn't, this will nail the Star Trek coffin closed for many years to come. Probably not forever though.
They make too much money from the brand name to shut it away forever. They'll bring it back, but it's not gonna be 'our' Trek.
Honestly, if we never got to see another Trek movie, series, book or anything, I wouldn't be upset about it. For a show that fought cancellation almost from day one, it's made a shitload of money. I hope it turns out to be good, and the fact that Barmaga are not involved in this in any way gives this movie a fighting chance.
I'm waiting for the new Law and Order: Star Trek series to start. In the premier, it turns out they launched Lenny Briscoe's corpse to the Genesis planet where he regenerates and comes back to life, and he smacks former detective Green in the head for bending the rules and resigning the force. Richard Belzer guest stars as Det. T'Munch.
I agree with Scorp. I couldn't quite put my finger on what I didn't like about the poster, but I agree with most of his observations. It looks like a proof of concept that was never meant to make it to the public--like "We'll do the poster in the different section colors for each character--black for the bad guy. And the photos will be in the shape of the Trek 'delta'. I'll throw something together to show you what I'm talking about." It's like: cocktail napkin>proof of concept>actual poster. This thing looks like a proof of concept. If someone showed me it, I'd say "I like it. Spend the time and money to do it up right."
