Kirk looks too much like he's planning to kill and eat a small child.

That's only in your imagination. You'll never budge, and even if this movie is the best movie of 2009, you'd be grumpy and hold it for its flaws rather than ever even once see the good parts in it, not even once acknowledging them.

Speaking from my perspective, StarTrek itself is an undeniable classic. It cannot have dents, it is flawless. Campiness and old-special-effects added, that is its charm. Trek became what it is because OF what it is, and anybody who says otherwise is full of shit and fail.

    That being said...

    ..StarTrek is not infallible.

    It can be bettered.

    It can be added onto.

    It can be strengthened.

It can and will be made into another roaring success that it used to be.. and forever will be.

In other words, it can be repackaged for an entirely new generation. A generation that might think (wrongfully, as it is though) that StarTrek is a product of its time. And it was, though it isn't. The execution of StarTrek has been such a perfect mix of perfection AND mistakes that it still stirs echoes in the depths of people that watch it.

    It has become timeless.

Even though I have most episodes in my harddrive - both old/original and new/remastered - IF an episode is playing on the TV, I sit down till the end.

THAT is how much of a drawing power it has.

And now StarTrek is coming back, with an old crew that we all love, but with a completely different cast. A cast that might, and I know I'll be stomped to the ground for this ... be BETTER even than the original actors? We do not know how the end product would be until we start seeing the end credits in the theatre.

A year and a half ago, when HeathLedger's Joker's pictures were released, a lot of people hated them. "He doesn't look anything like we are used to in the comics, waaaaaahhh!!". And now, after the movie is finally viewed, people are raving that this is the best depiction of the Joker in any media ever!! Wow, a complete 180.

StarTrek was 'before' my time. I was born in 1981. I was introduced to 'StarTrek' first through my mother who used to tell me stories of the episodes (as the reruns still didn't start) and then after I saw the first run shows of TNG. Enamoured by TNG, which was hated by the TOS fans (at first), I decided to check out TOS as well. Loved it equally. Discovered BOTH Treks at the same time.

What harm has it done except that I discovered TOS as well, through TNG, a chance that I might not have taken if I never watched TNG in the first place?

Same with this StarTrek, the movie. What harm can it possibly do, except that it might introduce the original, beloved Trek to an entirely new generation, parts of which are completely oblivious to the Greatness that is StarTrek?

SO FUCKING WHAT if it isn't our beloved old TOS, of whose imaginations we used to play with our friends, and dream of reaching the stars?

This movie, this NEW movie, is not going to instantly erase the tapes, copies, DVD's, books... or memories... of Old Trek.

If anything, it will ADD to it, with a new story to boot, not to mention a new throng of fans.

    Bring on, May 8th, 2009!

That is the day that all the naysayers, purists and unbudging geeks will STFU forever and make the Internet a better haven for people that look towards the brightness of the future, than hold on to the relics of the past.

People that were inspired by TOS in the first place.

I think the poster looks decidedly retro, which is kind of a nice throwback.

Also, the reasons bits of the delta were cut out was most likely due to size - the parts cuts are the tips, where nothing visually interesting is happening at all. You either have the tips and smaller pictures of everyone, or lose the tips and get bigger pictures.

I expect that the Uhura picture is a little washed-out looking because the pictures rely on black as contrast, and she is, well, black. So they probably had to pull up the brightness on her picture to get any detail out of the picture at all.

Red light makes things look out of focus--badly. I don't know the physics behind it, but it does.

I've shot concerts where I was focused on someone on stage (and I knew it was in focus because it was white light) and then they'd switch to a red gel and the image would go soft.

Until I got used to it, it always used to freak me out a little ("Must refocus!). :garamet:
