Canada probably does benefit militarily from having the USA next door. That doesn't however really back up the "America is subsidising Canadian health care" argument since even if the US dropped military spending to the same GDP percentage as Canada, the USA would still have the highest military spending of any country on Earth.

I have long supported the theory that Canadia is like a bizarro alternate United States where we never got around to fighting the Revolutionary War. Thanksgiving is in October. Independence Day is the First of July. The candy rabbits for Easter are made of Maple Syrup instead of chocolate. A football field is 105 yards long. Everything is just a bit...off.

While avoiding being productive and reading this thread, I decided to Google image search "poor Canadians." Sadly, most of the results were much more depressing than I'd hoped for BUT...in supporting my alternate USA theory, I present to you...Canadian Ancalagon: :soma:

Yes I have. The version I read taught me that ignoring the rest of the world can have dire consequences in the future eg: Hitler,Mussolini, etc.. Which version did you read?

Unfortunately not all of us can afford to bury our heads in the sand and pretend like the rest of the world doesn't exist. SOMEONE has to be paying attention to what's going on. The pacifist view just doesn't work.

Actually, it works just fine until the first barbarian comes over the hill and starts slaughtering the pacifists.

He's not a soulless ginger like Anc, but I guess that's because he lives in Bizarro USA (Canada).

I would remind you that Canada has a very proud military tradition and has risen to the occasion when required.

We were fighting in WW1 and WW2 years before the Americans got off the fence and joined the party. In fact, in 1939 our military per capita rivaled that of your country's.

In 2001 we joined our friend and ally (yes that's you) in the war on terror and sent our largest military expedition force since the Korean War to Afghanistan. Aside from the United States, Canada had the largest per capita military involvement in Afghanistan. But for some reason the dentistry-challenged Brits get all the credit. Maybe Tony Blair was blowing Bush Jr. I don't know.

Fortunately we were smart enough not to get tangled up in Iraq.

That's a rather America-centric view of history. Hitler and Mussolini (aspiring world leaders, btw) rose to power for reasons that had nothing to do with America ignoring them (which we actually weren't). Or did you mean something else?

That's because you are still a British colony, which is by far, the worst thing about Canada. How's her majesty?
