In video games, there are certain instances where the music totally fits just right for the area your character is in. I was wondering if you guys have any favorite compositions in video games, i.e. where the music matches the mood or environment perfectly. Since I've installed Audacity, (thread in Techforge) I've been recording some of the most memorable in game music to MP3. Here are some of my top picks. Neverwinter Nights 2 - unknown song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVySktA9nyA [YT="YouTube"]rVySktA9nyA[/YT] Great music for forest type areas. Morrowind - The Call of Magic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnmcDJhKvFw [YT="YouTube"]XnmcDJhKvFw[/YT] Appropriate music for wide open expanses. Dawn of Mana - Rising Sun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBZF9RSyHWQ [YT="YouTube"]rBZF9RSyHWQ[/YT] A peaceful forest setting. Final Fantasy VIII - Breezy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdpqkTyaXMs [YT="YouTube"]SdpqkTyaXMs[/YT] Great song for a small coastal town. Final Fantasy XII - Seeking Power http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPHyLbk6yiY [YT="YouTube"]NPHyLbk6yiY[/YT] Song for snowy mountain pass. Final Fantasy XII - The Dalmascian Estersand http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4RKHn-0KU8 [YT="YouTube"]I4RKHn-0KU8[/YT] Song for running across a desert. It has a very "Mask of Zorro" feel to it. Final Fantasy XII - Eruyt Village http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ieerkbitBo [YT="YouTube"]8ieerkbitBo[/YT] Perfect song for a village in the trees. Final Fantasy 11 - Ronfaure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA79eJ8wlhY [YT="YouTube"]ZA79eJ8wlhY[/YT] In a forest of a mighty Elvaan kingdom with a castle nearby. I could post more, but those are my top picks.
Ronfaure sucked ass I much preferred the live version of Gustaberg, or the music for The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuvxcpQ-veg For console games my favorite ambient music has been from Okami http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQxtVw2sJ7Q&feature=related and Katamari http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voPx8x0-blQ. Okami because it puts me in a super-relaxing trance, and Katamari... need I say more?
Of these selections, Morrowind, though overall the soundtrack overall was one of the weakest elements of the game and became rather repetitive. Best game ever.
Castlevania II had the best soundtrack ever. The Silence of the Daylight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r_LfDqBUaQ When wandering around town during the day. Bloody Tears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s05jFNcoslY When wandering around the countryside during the day. Really makes you feel like you're on an epic quest. Monster Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shbonj1je6M Uh oh! Night hath fallen. Enemies are tougher and shops in towns are closed. Oh, and now monsters roam the towns, and the churches no longer provide healing. Dwelling of Doom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ancZsDB1Hew You've just wandered into a haunted mansion that houses one of the five remaining pieces of Dracula's body. Oh, and incidently, it was also ripped off Yngwie Malmsteen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrUj_0bgZPw Within These Castle Walls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTcxqhKedAU You've collected all of Drac's body parts, and you've entered his castle. You must resurrect Dracula and subsequently destroy him in order to break the curse he's placed on you. Your quest is coming to an end, and the music shows this. Welcome Belmont http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8hU8SNjMLY You've just resurrected Dracula, and now have to destroy him. Too bad the fight is so quick you can very easily avoid hearing this tune altogether in-game. A Requiem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0rekW9j_tQ You just slew Dracula. I refuse to describe anything else due to spoilers.
Everytime I hear that Morrowind song I long for another really good open world RPG. Morrowind got it *all* right. "Stand up, there you go, terrible storm last night wasn't it?"
Morrowind was definitely one of the best and most memorable games I've played, but it could have done a few things better. For one, it felt like a pretty lonely game. Like, you had no friends. The only way you could own your own place was really, to kill someone and take their house. It would've been nice to have a few friends get your back every once in awhile. Another thing I didn't like about the game was there were very few places that had nice scenery. A lot of it was dark dungeons, and that was depressing after awhile. It would've been nice if every once in awhile, there were a good looking waterfall or forest that didn't look like it was located on the backside of Satan.
The Great Houses disagree! That's kinda the point of Vvardenfell. Horrible, hellish wasteland. But see the southern swamps, grasslands, et cetera.
I pipe all of my audio through an A/V receiver so I don't have to accept the soundtrack a game offers.
Halo and Fallout are the best soundtracks ever IMO. Hell, I ripped the Mjolnir Remix theme and play it all the time in the car.
Wing commander 2 theme. http://download.wcnews.com/music/wc2/wing commander ii - main theme (cloak and dagger).mp3
On a few occasions I timed my actions in the Barrows in Might and Magic VII juuust right so they synched with the background music . . . that was magical.
