For those who might not remember, in February, Zimbabwe abandoned its hyperinflated currency, ended its price and capital controls, and shut down its central bank. In the last 9 months, it seems a lot has changed. http://covertress.blogspot.com/2009/11/zimbabwe-fresh-start.html Last 2 paragraphs of conclusions (including the land issue) and Personal Notes at the link.
It's really no surprise to me that Mugabe taking his blood-stained hands off the economy made things better. If there is a Hell I hope there's a special place reserved for him. The rape of Zimbabwe is one of the worst crimes ever perpetrated against humanity. That country has everything needed to be one of Africa's crown jewels Instead it's a festering hell hole. Hopefully things will continue to get better although with Mugabe, you never know when he'll decide it's time to step in and fuck things up again. Somewhat off topic: I remember a few years back when Argentina was on the verge of making the $ U.S. it's official currency.
In the 1890's, Argentina had a standard of living similar to the US. They're just not exceptional, like us.
The problem with this is that if the whole world's currency collapses you can't use the Zimbabwe solution of turning to another country's currency.
