Mind you I'm talking about assessing and acting upon a person's mental health, should that person raise suspicions, period. You seem to be automatically associating it with "for the purposes of denying them a gun." While that WOULD be a result, that's not the only, or primary, reason to help someone who needs help.

Shooters mom worked at school as teacher. Not sure if she is one of the dead yet. Looking more and more as a domestic dispute.

That sounds sensible as far as it goes. More of an outreach...like "Anti-Bullying" campaign, but geared more towards people acting strange. Maybe coming up with a list of "warning signs" and a hotline for parents to call?

I don't have any stats handy, but I've been hearing EXACTLY the opposite for many years.

Not related to the particular story... But Charlie Brooker nails it on the head YET AGAIN re: news coverage.

Does such a thing exist? I'm not talking about some Stasi-esque secret school police, but a formal, confidential system to report, analyze and act on anti-social and potentially dangerous behavior. I have no idea who sets it up or pays for it, it's just an idea.

Another thing we need to do is take the stigma off mental illness and treatment. People who need help need to have easy and inexpensive access to it.

Agree 100%. But mental health issues still carry a stigma in this country, and often those who most need help are furthest from getting it.

You don't think that you're talking about some Stasi like service, but you are. The only way that anything like that could achieve anything close to its goals would be through incredible abuse of a tremendous number of citizens.

I don't know. That sounds just a hair creepy. I was thinking something along the lines of "Do you think your kid/friend/family member is going to do something newsworthy in a very bad way? Are they exibiting any of these warning signs? Call this number and our trained counselers will help you out somehow"

Like they do for drug abuse and cutting and anorexia.

Think about it, Actormike. You're saying "I know this sounds like the Stasi, but I'm not talking about the Stasi!"

Not with the amount of crap people put on social media. I would imagine the shooter was leaving clues all over the place, and nobody picked up on them or had the authority to act.

I'd support this 100%. But when it gets into the realm of "friend," much less "loner next door who sometimes stands on his lawn threatening people," it tends to become "none of my business/not my problem."

Right before the beginning of this school years, a couple of boys from a local high school made some Columbine references on their Facebook pages about the upcoming first day of school. "Can I borrow your shotgun?" kinds of statements.

Were they joking? Maybe, but local police investigated and arrested them and they were charged with making terroristic threats.

The mother was killed at her house in a domestic fight and the asshole son drove her car to the school and started shooting.

The mental health system in this country is a joke. They got rid of the programs and hospitals. Now the crazies are housed (and treated) in prisons.

But wait. How did they get treatment in prison? They committed a felony.

    Because they were crazy.

It is weird though how each time one of these goes down, the very first reports (before the mind control machine gets into operation?) are often of multiple shooters in tactical vests... Then after an hour or so it settles down to one lone nutbar.

Which is true of just about everyone. Do you suggest being able to shut someone up, and force "treatment" on them, just because "someone suspects something amiss about their mental state"? The massive witchhunt you are setting up would be far worse than the problem it is supposed to solve.

The point is that it takes more than "someone suspecting something amiss about someone's mental state" to justify depriving a person of liberty and constitutional rights, and to require them to undergo any sort of "treatment."

And simply responding to anyone who does not agree with your radical ideas with "So you think children should be murdered" is not worthy of being taken seriously. That is the worst kind of straw man, as if the only two possibilities were "doing something" every time "someone suspects something amiss about someone's mental state" and "letting children be murdered." You have shown your very worst side in this thread.

Given that I never advocated for anything like that, I guess the answer is no.

You seem to be thinking I said something I didn't. I never advocated taking people away in the middle of the night for thoughtcrime. But I can almost guarantee that the shooter left clues behind as to his mental illness and his plans for murder. Picking up on those clues and alerting someone in a position of power might have saved lives today. I'm advocating increased resources mental health treatment and doing more to stop these massacres before they happen. Do you have problems with this?

What do you propose we do? Wring our hands and pray? Arm six year olds? What are your ideas?

    Left clues?

According to reports the shooter was autistic and had a personality disorder.

Most likely stole someones guns from his house.

Also I was wrong earlier. Mother of gunman was killed in school with her class. Not sure who was killed at the house but it's been reported the father of the shooter is also dead. Also missing are two other people involved with the family according to reports.
