yeah, the bottom three is almost as tricky as the top to decide the order of.

These lists are pretty consistent with three of the four ST:TNG movies pretty much universally disliked.

I think that is attributable to a number of factors:

    1) Unsuitability of the TNG cast to a movie series.
    2) Having a television producer (and in many ways a mediocre one) Rick Berman in charge of the TNG movies.
    3) Some of the flat out worst writing in the Trek franchise.

Incidentally, I think that several of the things that are worst about Nemesis are also things I hate about The Final Frontier and the Abramsverse movies.

Yeah but the great thing about Star Trek unlike those other movies is that they killed that son. A knife right to the gut for his troubles.

And notice how the top 4 tend to be the same four (so far) with only some variation between 3 and 4?

The next seven are simply a list of weak to awful.

Personally, I think what it indicates is that we've had 34 years of mediocre to bad Star Trek movies with the good one popping up occasionally.

Which to me just goes to show why Star Trek should be a television franchise and not a movie one.

You can tolerate 8 really bad Trek episodes a season and 8 average ones when that means you still can have 10 outstanding ones in the same year.

Bill Hunt, from The Digital Bits, probably has the most spot-on review that I've read so far. Even though I haven't seen the movie, his characterization of the fanboys is what leads me to believe that he gets it.

It's always amusing how some people feel the need to insulate themselves from negative reviews by claiming only NERDS would be negative about a bad movie that they happen to like. :diacanu:

Yep, I went there. Abrams Trek is my favorite of all the Trek movies. It was way more fun than any of the previous films, and I never get tired of watching it.

TMP comes in at #3 because it was the most ambitious, and the closest in spirit to the theme of exploration. Sure it's slow and has it's flaws, but it's a far superior film than everything else that came after it.

TUC is much lower on my list than others because it was just so ridiculous in too many places. Sure, there were some great moments, but overall it fell flat.

While Nemesis sucked, it doesn't nearly suck as bad as Insurrection and TFF. Insurrection was at best another bad TV Trek episode (of which there were worse), while TFF is far far down in the stink pile as to be 100% nonredeemable.

And Pacific Rim, which looks frakkin' AWESOME.

All the spoilers aside, my big problem with this new Trek movie remains the same: they rebooted the franchise in order to jettison all the old continuity baggage, and yet here we are going right back to TWOK for the source. I mean, come on . . .

And given that they were letting the cat out of the bag right in the ST09 commentary track, it was the plan all along.

They obviously wanted TWOK-2, but Khan's atoms were sprayed across the Mutara sector.

    So...THIS.

It was the problem with doing the 'warm' reboot, and including the Primeverse - you have jettisoned a lot of the continuity problems but you're left with the same entities. A 'cold' one would have solved that.

I disagree they're going to TWOK for the source, this is a substantially different story with elements lovingly [-]stolen[/-]borrowed from TWOK.

I just hope this Khan is truly unleashed and is revisited in the future.

There may be echoes of TWOK in the new film--and, really, don't we WANT to see characters we liked from the other continuity return?--but the new film hardly re-establishes the timeline. There's no Genesis Device, no Reliant, no Saavik, no David, Spock doesn't die, this all happens while Kirk is young, etc., etc. If it's a remake of Hamlet, it's missing the Prince of Denmark.

Ah, but this is NOT slaved to the previous continuity. It recycles (perhaps unwisely) ONE person (who, by the way, would exist in this continuity whether or not we ever saw what he was up to) and use him in an almost completely different way (apparently)

Yes, one can argue that they weakly decided to reuse several tropes from previous material, but they are not the SAME pattern of events in almost any way. From what I've sen, only the big space battle showdown and the death bit are obviously re-purposed.

So no0, really, they are not re-runningthe same set of events.

I remind the room again that this is not "Old Bitter Khan" this is Young Space-seed Khan - and the events HERE are NOTHING like the events of Space Seed.

I thought the Hamlet rip off was "Conscience of the King"?

    TWoK was Moby Dick.

I didn't mean the movie was literally a remake.

I meant that, if one considers the new film a remake of TWOK, then one would also consider a story without the the Prince of Denmark to be a remake of Hamlet. (For the less literate: Hamlet IS the Prince of Denmark, so a remake of Shakespeare's play without that character could hardly be a remake.)

Trying to decide whether NEM, TFF, or INS is the worst is like trying to decide if you want to get kicked in the left nut or the right nut.

STID is now rated 90% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes!!!

In comparison, Iron Man 3, which everyone seems to be enjoying, was only rated 73% Fresh.

Sounds like it's going to be a better movie.

"Gone With the Wind" is consistently ranked as one of the greatest movies of all time.

To this day, I think it is little more than the junk you see on Lifetime (the network for women), just with some huge set piece battles.
