Yeah, we had something similar. Previous owner came back a week or two later wanting some stuff that was in the back yard. I told her "sure, go ahead." But she left an extension ladder. She called to say she wanted it some days later, but in the interim a sheriff's deputy had come to the house looking for her, to serve some papers that were probably related to the divorce she was going thru. We told her about that and that's the last we've ever heard from her.

I still have the ladder. :diacanu:

Maybe I'm just a power slut, but why the hell would ANYONE turn in a gun? Well, then again if it was just a pussy derringer or something, I can't say I wouldn't toss it into the Thames River or something, but turn it into the hands of people who look at guns like they're the HIV virus, hell no.

Take it out in to the street and then run at the first copper you see.

Bonus points if you managed to wave the gun in his face for more then three seconds.

    Chop chop.

Ain't no cops around here and I own the street outside my house. I can legally go armed on my land, would not point at anyone I don't intend to kill.
You can't legally carry a steak knife on your own property there in the UK.

    Fuck no.

If he lives on a public street/road, he doesn't "own" it.

Maybe he lives on a big ass ranch and by "street", he means "the long driveway that runs for 2 miles before intersecting the farm road". That's all I can think of.

    Hello everyone.

I think we can agree that the problem in this scenario is that the people in charge (judges, chiefs etc.) don't or can't use common sense if they work strictly by the book. Law itself is meant to provide justice but has repeatedly proven that it's impossible to account for every possible situation. It's in cases like this when it shows that you don't need to be honest, intelligent or sensible to get a job such as a judge, who should be all these things.

Some time ago we had an incident here in Slovenia, where a post office was robbed. The crooks toke some money, bags and some other stuff. Later, when police investigated some guys (with a criminal record) apartment they discovered everything that was stolen from the post office. In court, the stupid judge let them go dismissing the evidence because it was collected in an "inappropriate" manner - as in, without a dedicated search warrant. The crook was set free, and all the stolen stuff was returned to him. This is pure idiocy and it makes me ashamed to live in a country where this can happen.

Giving the stolen things back to him is the ultimate "fuck you" to the justice system.

IIRC the survey map of our former property, it extended to the centerline of the main road our house was on. I think we were "responsible" for it in some way I never understood. Not sure if the word "owned" could be applied.

It had obviously been deliberately ditched, so there's a good chance it'd been used in the commission of a crime--a murder, a robbery, who knows?

Why the hell would you want to keep hold of something like that?

If you were talking about the States, I would agree, it had most likely been used in a violent crime and dumped.

However in the UK where just the possession IS A CRIME, and the cops go around arresting people for turning them in, who is to say the person just didn't want to get rid of it?

Doesn't mean you'd want to cling onto the gun anymore than the guy who dumped it. You probably don't want it for the same reasons he doesn't.

It was a sawed-off to boot! Odds are pretty low anyone with a sawed off wasn't a crook.

It could b like those dollars that people track what cities they've been too.

For all we know this gun was located 50 miles away and each person who found it tossed it into the neighbors yard. Eventually the gun landed in this guys yard but instead of tossing it to the next neighbor he screwed up. The ultimate game of hot potato?

Don't you people have a monarch to counteract abuses of justice like this?

According to royalists she brings in 'tourism'. And traditionalists like all the pomp and ceremony.

I dont buy the tourism angle as the country that is by miiiiles the biggest tourist draw in the world (France) is a republic.

No, I was right. The power to pardon is a royal prerogative.

Clearly the Queen should step in here and grant pardon.

The queen can also dissolve parliament,... in theory.
In reality if the queen or any of the vast civil-service royal household ever tried to use any of thier 'on paper' power they would first be laughed at then told to sod off.

I think you overestimate the rigidity of the average man's spine.

People will comply with any lawful order they've been given, because the alternative is chaos. This is programmed into us from our days as apes, because one alpha (fe)male is preferable to a bunch of betas arguing amongst themselves.

Besides, the population of Great Britain is weaker to the relative strength of the army more than ever before.
