Apply that logic to real life and explain why there are dangerous animals in our zoos, national parks, and aquariums?

Also, I put "normal" in quote marks for a reason. In this case, "normal" does not mean common. It means possible. It means there is precedent. It means there is a small inherent risk associated with working with these animals. This is something the trainers are no doubt aware of. If resident orcas can occasionally be unpredictable with other mammals, then how do you justify calling this one a rogue?

So if I climb into the cage of a captured wild tiger in a zoo, and happen to get eaten, the tiger should be shot?

Nope, you said you thought it should be released, because it doesn't like being captive and is killing people.

Why after its killed 3 people should it be released into the wild - where honestly we have very little idea what it will do.

Kill more people if it wanted to, just like other man-eating species do. So what?

Well, this is the third time.

Did it intentionally kill? Have no idea. And while in humans that's a big deal, in animals its less so (even though I think many animals have the ability to reason within their own frame of reference, therefore may have 'intent').

Did it intentionally take actions that has repeatedly killed humans? Yep.

    For me, that's enough.

Obviously others differ and believe there's absolutely no danger of it happening again. LOL.

    Fair enough.

    However,

    1) not every mammal that kills a human is put down because it might start eating us.
    2) nothing about releasing it to the wild ensures that it won't attack another human.

Hell no. There is not one single documented case of an orca killing and eating a human in the wild. In fact, there isn't any case of an orca killing a human in the wild at all, as far as I know.

Yeah, let's get worked up over a couple of captive whales, with the way we treat cows, hogs, and chickens by the millions in order to keep up with our massive appetites.

Fuck the dumbass who swims with killer whales every day. No sympathy. Fuck the damned whale, too. Probably a big, belligerant asshole anyway.
Boil the pool and turn 'em both into asshole soup.

That's what I figured. As I read the posts I was wondering what they were thinking. That the whale would hang out near a beach?? Stalk divers?? What?

Because they are put in positions that they can't kill humans.

When however they do kill humans, it is always a viable consideration to put them down, and that is what happens in many cases. Here's two captive Tigers that were put down after killing their keepers:

    http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20000203a1.html

    http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?173811-Tiger-put-down-because-it-killed-a-man

The most recent case the Tiger that escaped and killed one and mauled two others was shot by police:

    http://articles.sfgate.com/2007-12-26/bay-area/17273047_1_zoo-tiger-cages

I don't believe I called it a rogue - that was EP. However, its behavior is definitely different than those of the other Orcas held as Sea World as its the only one that has a single body count, let alone three, so yes, I'd say that is valid.

Rogue doesn't mean 'unnatural', it means different. This one is killing people.

Personally, I think we have a lot of Star Trek IV fans here that are experiencing transference. :D

Well what do the other Orca's do? And do people often swim in proximity of whales?

Dude, a whale can't 'escape' and kill people.

The only people a whale can kill are the people that stand on his head for amusement. :zod:

Yea, let's not consider one of them was an idiot who thought swimming with an Orca would make a great tale to tell. That didn't turn out so good for his dumb ass. Darwin wins.

Exactly. For all you know it could have been playing with them.

Ok, so you're saying you don't know it's intent, but let's just kill it to be sure. Right.

Again, was it with malice and predijuce or just a bit of a tantrum? don't know huh? Well, neither oes anyone else.

    Obviously.

Sure there's a chance, where has anyone said otherwise? You just seem to want revenge because we're human or some such silliness.

Your solution is to kill it. Sorry I don't carry that thought process.

Its a friggin' whale. There is only whale intelligence. This only covers survival and reproduction.

But I do know that they 'think' about food. These whales eat between 150-220 lbs of food per day.

All you or anybody else is to a whale is FOOD. Or a play toy.

The CSM has some background on this particular killer whale:

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0225/Sea-World-tragedy-How-common-are-killer-whale-attacks

The link about the claim that there are no Orca attacks in the wild?

Once again, nothing there in the linked article that says anything at all about how common or uncommon they are.

    http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2010/0128/Orca-population-bounces-back-in-the-Northwest

So this guy is wild from Newfoundland (not a resident, as Ash stated), and he has a son that has also killed. Unfortunately this guy is a stud, used to breed in captivity, as it seems very odd to breed a potential dangerous beast known for its aggression.

False. In zoos, that may be true, but it doesn't account for the dangerous animals we allow to exist in the wild.

I'm aware that this is done. I don't really agree with it (except for the cat that was shot by police because it was out of it's enclosure and on the rampage). However, I do think it's somewhat more understandable when dealing with big cats. When a tiger becomes a man-eater, it's behavior is drastically changed. In the wild, man eating cat can kill hundreds of human beings before it is finally brought down. Comparing this orca to a man-eating cat is inappropriate. I know you are resistant to the idea that this orca had multiple opportunities to kill in the 18 years between it's first and last fatality, but you have to believe that a man eating cat would have been 100 times more lethal given similar access to humans.

Fair enough, it was EP that used the word rogue.

If you go to the original story there's an embedded link in there - that I posted above.

The story linked to has nothing to do with Orca attacks in the wild.

Maybe it's just bad formatting, but in both cases that I've seen stories related to how there aren't any Orca attacks, the stories linked to don't actually state that in their body.

The next mug to make me jump out of the water for a fish is DONE!! If I could, I would jump out of the tank and into the stands and eat a whole bunch of those fuckers!!!"

There actually are a few documented cases of an Orca attacking a person in the wild. Just no documented cases of an Orca killing a person in the wild. I remember one fairly recent example where an Orca bumped a child in shallow water (kind of like those videos you see of Orca grabbing seals in shallow water). However, the Orca did no real damage and did not pursue the attack. If anything, that points to Orcas preferring not to kill humans and it definitely indicates that they do not consider us prey.

Sorry, I assumed people here understood something about breeding genetics.

You don't set the ones out to stud that have undesirable traits. You know, like killing people. It's a darwin thing.

Again, and no Tex you haven't answered this, what is the inherent value of keeping this thing alive?

Take out a bolt thrower, pop it in the brain, and send it over to Japan. I'm sure they consider it a delicacy. :D

Killing it is the only scenario that it will never have an opportunity to kill again. What possible value does its very existence hold that would counterbalance that?

    1. Just having one more whale and the knowledge that we didn't kill it for only the need to satisfy a desire for revenge.

    2. Apply that logic to every creature in the wild. They can't kill us if we kill'em all first!

Maybe because we share the same environment as these creatures, if they are shown to be unusualy dangerous killers they are killed to protect us.
Drop this thing off in the middle of an ocean and it isn't likely to be a threat to humans anymore.....
