How convenient. Pretty funny for someone who supposedly worships science. But hey....please feel free to give up now and start preparing for the inevitable.
"Fucked" is a relative term. The first world will be able to mitigate most of the effects of warming for a long time, expensive though it may be; the third world (and the ecosystem generally) less so.
So maybe it's time for the third world to join the second world. If they aren't willing to do it themselves, and given the fact that they still haven't despite the decades of aid sent their way, maybe it's time for the first world to colonize them again and drag the savages into the 21st century. No half assed measures this time.
I agree, fucked is a relative term. But, it is a term that Jenee chose to use. I'd like some elaboration on it. We are no more fucked today regarding the environment and its status than we were yesterday, or a century ago. Through out human history, there have been reports of droughts, famines, along with many other natural disasters. In times passed some believed those disasters to be punishment from God. Today, we still have people attempting to place the blame for these things. Now they would like to place it on humans. Southern CA which is mostly desert, experiences "drought" for a number of years, its because of Global Warming. The South experiences a devastating hurricane or two, and all of the sudden that is because of Global Warming too. In fact, some of the same nutjobs started predicting that Hurricane Katrina was just the beginning of more devastating hurricanes and even more devastating hurricanes. Yet, we have had some rather calm years since the year of Katrina. When simple realities are brought up about climate change, such as this has always been taking place, then we get the bullshit excuse that oh well, now it is happening at a faster pace. Well how much faster? If that is true, then provide concrete evidence for it. Oh and if you can, it had better be with a different group of scientists then the ones who have perpetrated some of the false data and questionable data over the past few years. Jenee, I'll take it a step further regarding your comments. You are threatening to leave Illinois because of the increase in taxes and not wanting to pay the higher costs. What do you think happens when the government interferes and demands new environmental regulations? Do you think those are free? Do you think that the government will not charge the citizens more via taxes?
We're gonna run out of food before we boil the planet. Already saw a bit of it this year, Russia has a bad wheat harvest and it screws with food production across 4 continents. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need to start developing synthetic foods....
Right we'll run out of food. There haven't been famines before on the planet has there. Danny, is Henny Penny your favorite story? Because you sure sound a lot like Henny Penny right about now.... "oh the sky if falling, the sky is falling!"
Do you work at being this stupid or does it come naturally. Tell you what, start from the beginning of this thread and reread every post. When you're done, and it still needs explaining, come back here and let me know where I can point out the errors in your reading comprehension.
Ah, so asking you, someone who needs others to provide you with clues and thoughts, take offense to someone asking for your definition of a relative term? Braintrust Jenee is getting uppity. Tell you what Jenee, its okay to admit you don't know what you are talking about. Now, don't you have some packing to do? Isn't Illinois getting to expensive for you to live in?
Nothing? I guess it could be because I never said that. I just said that if you were going to make a claim present it as a "fact", most people will back that up with some kind of information. For example, I found this graph of the amount of sea ice in Anarctica. It looks to me like we actually had above average ice for 2009, compared to 1979-2000. And it looks like there's going to be more ice in 2010 than there was in 2009.
Area /= volume Ice freezes in winter and much of it melts in the summer, we all know this. The problem is that the ice has been getting thinner so that the volume has been steadily decreasing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nruCRcbnY0
Nope. Because lying was systematic, we should just ignore everything the liars say and carry on with our eyes opened to their habitual lying.
Ice volume has gone up 25% in the last 3 years. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/05/29/arctic-ice-volume-has-increased-25-since-may-2008/ This according to the US Navy, who actually spends time in the Arctic, unlike the majority of climatologists. For some strange reason however, there's been very little coverage of this. Guess it doesn't bode well for funding. Also, a significant percentage of ice melt has been due to soot particles changing the albedo in the arctic. http://www.canada.com/technology/Soot second leading cause climate change study/3349011/story.html And even more of it has been due to wind pattern changes. And no, there's no direct evidence linking that to climate change. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/mar/22/wind-sea-ice-loss-arctic Finally, ultimately who cares? Polar Bears? They aren't an endangered species. Maybe the Inuit. Regardless, it's not an issue for 99% of the world - as none of this is going to increase sea levels.
In other news, it turns out the Global Warmingmongers conspired to cover up data generated using your tax dollars: So apparently Global Warming Science works much the same way the Underpants Gnomes business plan does. Isn't science about peer review and independent verification and all that?
Kind of tough when (because of more takers than givers) your great-great grandkids will be 560 trillion dollars in debt (per kid) by then! Thanks, Obama! :santa_angry:
Well, there are limits to what the ecosystem can handle, and we sure as hell are wiping out vast chunks of wildlife, and I think we are affecting weather to a degree through mass deforestation and building. That being said, we aren't close to any tipping point now that will condemn our ancestors to a thousand years of hell. And some people are definitely trying to cash in on the green trend for their own benefit.
I just saw this post (better late than never) but your own link shows 2011 as being the second lowest ice volume on record.
It's the 17th of December and there has yet to be a dip below freezing here in Toronto... just sayin'.
Where? Edit: Ah, you are referring to the AMRE-2 chart. Looked it up, and yes, this year was a very low year (ever is a kind of silly word in context here though, we don't have much real data on arctic sea ice extent, it really is only credible since about 1950). The last 3 years showed a significant rebound which coincided with little warming, 2011 however was a warm year and there was a considerable melting period. And actually, looking into it more - arctic sea ice is important in one very serious way, the albedo becomes much lower so more energy reflects off the ice pack than does the ocean. So we actually introduce a small but significant amount more energy from the sun into the earth system in years of low ice coverage. However, it is also beneficial in a lot of other ways - Canada and Russia in particular could benefit enormously from resources and increased living space.
I believe what they call 2011 is the 2010-2011 winter. So last winter while this winter would be 2012.
so does that mean the world is supposed to end next week? no matter the year, it's unseasonably mild here.
