1st choice would be to leave it alone
2nd choice would be to at least keep the comment system
I'd be sad if it was gone completely. :(

    Leave it alone.

Pity there's not a way to turn it off for people who complain about it a lot one way or another.

I voted I don't care. Really though I do believe taking away the neg reps would actually be the best thing. It would certainly be fun to watch the melt down of the rep warriors.

This. When I first turned mine off back in the day, several of 'em actually went whining to the Help Desk demanding that it be turned back on. That's beyond pitiful...

To be blunt, what dog do you have in this fight?

Have you ever been the target of an organized rep jihad?

All these folks saying leave the system alone, it ain't broke. No, what you really mean is "it ain't broke FOR ME." Unfortunately, for others it is broken.

Look, it's obvious the bullies aren't going to voluntarily hand over their brass knuckles. It's going to take a command decision by the owner of the board to change it, despite what this or any other poll may indicate (and I definitely found it interesting that Tamar failed to include in her list of options the "+1, but no -1" setup, that myself and others are endorsing).

Is Lanzman the guy to finally lift this albatross from WF's neck? Probably not, but we'll see....

Or you could just turn off your rep. That'll wind 'em up even more, which is always fun to watch.

This is the kind of thing I referenced earlier, either in this thread or one of the other rep threads.

I just don't get the "Waaah! People are giving me lots of neg reps! :tantrum: " mentality.

Sheesh, it's just red squares and comments FFS.

If the rep sytem were abolished (and I don't care one way or the other if it is) what would be the difference between neg reps and people "gang posting" nasty things to a particular person?

None, at least not that I can see.

The pips and rep score apparently matter a lot to the "rep victims". :dayton:

I could maybe get behind that idea. For those who like the "popularity" of rep, it would still work, but it would no longer be possible to "punish" someone by negging them. Nevertheless, the negrep should still be there, so you don't have to give someone a posrep to tell them you disagree. Just make its value 0.

For someone like me who never negs anyone, that would be ideal. But it also might be a good way to keep the best of the system while taking away its most disruptive feature.

Although leaving it alone is fine with me, and is probably still my first option.

As someone pointed out in one on the comments on rep, if you get rid of the negs, you wind up making wordforge work a lot like facebook. There are so many people around that can't abide the slightest possible chance of hurt feelings. C'mon! This is supposed to be a little more rough-and-tumble than that, isn't it?

How about this, then? Is there a way to turn off rep for everyone everywhere but the Red Room? Then, leave it on in the Red Room but make sure everyone who might get their feelings hurt knows they can always turn it off if they don't want to play.

As well, it seems a way is needed to make a zero point quickie comment so maybe some genius vbulletin hacker could expand the system to include 0 to the existing -1 and +1 options available now.

Leave existing rep points alone, though. It's pretty clear a lot of people like the status quo.

That's exactly what I'm saying - and it's the same thing I find wrong over at TNZ. If a poster is disliked to the extent that it doesn't matter what they say, they're negged or responded to with so much negativity there's no room or even need for discussion.

One of the reasons I stopped posting in serious threads in TNZ is because you couldn't discuss opposing viewpoints because the opposed is gang banged with so many insults it's hard to follow the discussion.

So ..., I suppose in that sense ... maybe you're right - neg reps do cut way back on the amount of stupid posts and it's a bit easier to follow the discussion.

Too bad there isn't a way to get rid of the idiots.

At least make it so that the newbies aren't negged right off the bat. I think that may be one reason we get so few people here.

I've seen the typical "here's a newbie it must be a dual" thread get the newb 10 or so posreps and a flood of snarky comments about duality. If they can handle that little bit of what we're all about then they're good. If they get any negs it's because they deserve them - what can I say?

    In response to Bock,

Really? If I had come in here out of the blue - without having talked to Muad over at TNZ and then talking with you here - and started posting my leftist ideas, I would have been in the red immediately and probably would have left shortly after.

I'm not thin-skinned, but if I feel like everyone hates me, I'm not going to stay.

How in the fucking hell are you going to put an end to negativity? Please explain that feelgood bullshit to me?

If you eliminate the mean old doody headed negativity from the rep system, then what the fuck is next? Outlawing negative responses in posts?

Goddamn I hate you motherfucking liberals. That's the only people bitching about this. I'll give you one thing, you really do believe in this 'level-the-playing-field', everybody is special, kumbaya garbage you spew.

You're like children. Children should be told to shut the fuck up from time to time because they don't know any better.

Isn't it a good thing that in the vast world of the internet, those who have a problem with negativity do not need to be a part of a board like this.
