The first implies pursuing and eventually catching up to someone, the second implies maintaining some sort of distance.

Is one better than the other?

"I would rather be followed by a stranger than chased by a stranger"? I mean, is either good?

Since Martin can't dispute what Zimmerman says, we only have his account.

What we don't have is a motive for Martin to attack Zimmerman.

How appropos for a scandal like this to break just prior to the election. :chris:

I'm no rocket scientist but one has to wonder if this is being played on hard and fueled for racial tension purposes.

I mean come on, this kid is played to be a mama's boy and the reality is becoming clear of some of the shit the kid has been into.

    Suspended for tardies, pfft.

See? Time goes on and more info surfaces.

Yea. As Mewa pointed out, a smear campaign against a dead 17 year old kid - just so you guys can keep your right to bear arms and no one uses this incident against.

That is what all this is about isn't it? Because other than this smear campaign, there is nothing in the known facts about this incident to suggest that Martin would be the attacker.

Martin did break contact. We know that from Zimmerman's 911 call. Here's the area where the incident occurred.

    Pure speculation on my part.
If Zimmerman parked on the opposite side from the "cut through" he would have had to follow Trayvon down the curved path towards the "T" intersection. During his brief jog after Martin he may have made the intersection, but I doubt it. I think he made it maybe to the end of the building most likely the middle of it. Which would be the area in shadow in this picture. I think when he hung up with 911 he pushed on a little further. Then maybe thought the better of it and turned on his heel to go back to his truck. At which time he and Martin came face to face, as Martin had concealed himself round the corner of the building. A struggle ensued, resulting in Martin receiving a single gunshot wound to the chest.

That's the only way I see the fight occurring where it did. If Martin had as his girlfriend claimed, continued walking home after running and out distancing Zimmerman the incident could not have occurred where it did. Even if Zimmerman had regained contact. They would have been much further along.

    YMMV

That's the mind-blowing thing here. Zimmerman did everything wrong, according to everything I've ever been told about gun safety and carrying responsibly (much of it here on WF!) He went out of his way to involve himself in a potentially dangerous situation. He should be getting roasted. Yet the urge to circle the wagons is so strong people line up to defend him. :jayzus:

I don't think it's so much "defending" Zimmerman as not following the media/mob mentality to lynch the guy before all the facts are in. And the more facts that come in, the more holes develop in the "mainline media/NAACP" Official Version that Zimmerman was some kind of trigger-happy Klansman.

Depends on whether Zimmerman or Martin initiated contact, and whether Zimmerman was intending to pursue Martin.

    IOW, skinny as a rail.

That does not follow. Barring any statements from him to that effect (from when he was still alive, of course), it is pure opinion.

What's good for the goose should be good for the gander. If it's irrelevant that Zimmerman apparently had criminal charges against him dropped, it should be equally irrelevant that Martin was suspected of marijuana usage and possession of jewelry that may not have been his.

If it's relevant that Martin had that stuff in his recent past (presumably because it makes the possibility of Martin casing houses more substantial than if he had only been suspended for tardies), it should be equally relevant that Zimmerman has had accusations of criminal behavior in his past.

Consider these items: When told by the 911 operator that he didn't need to follow Martin, Zimmerman was already out of his car and following Martin on foot. How can you tell this? Because if you listen to the background you can here his "Door open" sound coming from his car. Zimmerman then sounds like he is becomming breathless. Zimmerman is also on the tape saying "OK" to the dispatchers statement. Now I cant speak for anyone else but that sounds like he is saying that he is going to heed their advice. I also take into account that in the final seconds of the call, his breathing sounds to slow to a more normal rate. So it sounds like he had at least stopped running and was breaking off contact.

Now why would Martin attack Zimmerman (LINK)? There are screen shots out there that have been made of Martin's Facebook and Twitter accounts that are in sharp contrast to the picture his family has tried to paint of him. Is there any conclusive proof from those screen shots of his postings and his friends that he was dealing and had recently attacked a bus driver? No. But in this day and age those accounts that he created, posted to, and maintained do show him in a different light in his own words and strongly suggest that he had been. With that in mind, so long as we are taking Zimmerman's past into account it is only fair to take Martin's into account as well. If this turns out to be true, then you have plenty of motive for a 17 year old 6'3, 150 lb to go after a 29 year old, 5'9, 200+ lb guy.

From what we have heard there is no way to determine if he violated any rules, commonly known or in statute, when it comes to carrying concealed. There are no reports that he withdrew his weapon, there are no reports that he waved it around trying to be intimidating. Barring those from happening then he properly carried. The only things we know about the weapon are this: At some point it discharged while Zimmerman was on the ground on his back. Martin was on top of him. The weapon did not cycle after firing. This is a clear indicator of either a major malfunction of the firearm or that multiple hands were on it, interfering with its operational cycle.

No new "evidence" has been presented. We're just hearing more of Zimmerman's original testimony that night.

It still doesn't change anything relevant.

There were reports of a warning shot, however. How is that not an attempt to be intimidating?

I don't think you have to think Zimmerman's a trigger-happy Klansman or even that he has any guilt beyond taking his Neighborhood Watch duties a little too seriously to question some of what's gone on in this case.

There have apparently been a couple of witnesses who claim that the investigators were either asking leading questions as if they were trying to support a self-defense theory, and a couple others who say that the investigators were not interested in hearing more detailed statements from them that would tend to go to a non-justifiable homicide.

There's at least reasonable grounds to think that the official investigation was lacking.

No one has addressed the holes/questions in the "I was defending myself" theory in this thread.

I think the reaction would be a lot different if there were a more credible investigation that ultimately found self-defense rather than the one we've had.

However, critical elements are missing in the eyewitness account (even assuming it is unvarnished, gospel truth) and can be supplied only from Zimmerman, with no one left to contradict him, but no one to corroborate him, either:

    1) Who started the physical confrontation?

    2) Was Zimmerman brandishing his weapon before that, thus causing Martin to believe he was faced with a "fight or die" situation?

Lacking any witness left alive who can say whether or not Zimmerman is lying, there is very little chance of Zimmerman being prosecuted and even less of him being convicted. But there are enough questions about the situation, things that just don't make sense to me, that I still have a hard time eliminating the possibility that Zimmerman is "slanting" the story just enough that he won't forget the details of a story that is completely made up, and that it switches the scenario from "Martin had good reason to believe he had to defend himself from a grave, imminent threat" to "Martin had no justifiable excuse to start a fight."

Notice that I am not saying, either, that Zimmerman did do something that caused Martin to have sufficient reason to believe he was in grave, imminent danger. I am just saying that that remains, in my mind, a very real possibility.

That's what I was wondering. The pistol was fired one time and that was the fatal shot.
