It’s not okay to touch anybody in a sexual or suggestive manner without their active consent. Passive consent (“they let you do it”) is not consent at all.

In related news, Tim Kaine is asking the Senate to publicly release details of sexual harassment claims.

So, assuming this means that ultimately every male senator is kicked out or resigns amid sexual harassment allegations, we're left with 21 women - 16 Democrats and 5 Republicans. Thus the Democrats will take control of the upper chamber. Maybe that's the long game here? :chris:

    Al Franken statement summary:

I was giddy about #MeToo until I got burnt. But these lying whores deserve to be “believed” so Ima resign.

I’m not resigning because guilt, I’m resigning because “Minnesota.” For I dindu 99% of it and can’t rembember the other 1% for which there exists evidence.

It’s not fair ladies b giggling like “hai DJT, touch our pussies ...oh you missed a spot hehehe!” but I’m chopped liver?

I am returning to a lovely gullible wife who believes my bullshit, and 2 privileged kids. I’m also relieved because being a US Senator is grueling work — low pay and only 8 months/year vacation. But I am selfless and would do it all again so...

    Adieu.

He's not resigning. Notice how he said he's resigning in weeks.

It depends on Republicans and how they react to Roy Moore. They let Moore become a Senator than Franken will not be leaving.

I thought I watched the announcement closely, but perhaps your right. I definitely remember he didn’t admit guilt or apologize to anyone for anything. He also implied that MOST of the accusers were lying and he would have been vindicated through an ethics committee process.

Coulda sworn he used the ‘r’ word though...

He did...my assumption is that he'll see out the session through the Christmas recess at least. Probably some pending business, like the horrific judicial nominees the GOP are trying to ram through, that he wants to be involved in.

point of order: in the photo in question, he's not actually touching her - he's pantomiming groping her. In the absence of all other claims that photo would literally be nothing at all other than a case of boorish humor.

But there are other claims which do involve contact so...so be it.

    He did say resign.

But he didn't say resign tomorrow.

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/07/politics/speech-al-franken-transcript/index.html

"Nevertheless, today I am announcing that in the coming weeks I will be resigning as member of the United States Senate."

Like I said they need him for votes and if the Republicans let Roy Moore slide into a Senate seat instead of giving him the instant boot Franken will suddenly change his mind.

better check that assumption with women who work around such power drunk men.

It is an absolute guarantee that if several of these dudes we already know about feel confident enough in their power/wealth/desirability to whip our their dick and start beating off in front of a subordinate then similarly situated men feel no hesitation to grope her genitals at will as well.

And Trump is absolutely that sort of guy.

Ehhhh I'm not so sure. Franken's resignation might be legitimate. After all, the current governor of his state is a Democrat who will likely name another Democrat as a replacement. And that Governor is none other than...

    god damnit.....Governor Dayton.

Meh. If Franken stays, he'll be dogged for years about allegations, limiting his ability to get things done. If he leaves, his replacement won't have to deal with such things, and might actually beat the odds of getting re-elected.

Limiting his ability to get things done? He's not exactly doing anything now. Neither are most Senators to be honest.

I can’t imagine a course of events in which Franken stays.

And if so, and given Conyers’ compulsory resignation... Dems would totally lose the black caucus.

the speculation is that she was nominated specifically because she is unlikely to stand in the special election, thus allowing the governor to avoid biasing the Democratic field.

but it won't take beating the odds for the Democrats to hold the seat.

If they let Moore become a Senator, John Edwards and Anthony Weiner should be automatically reinstated, along with the ghost of Charles Manson.
