Think about all those internet 'libertarians' that supported Civil Unions For Everyone, from way back in the day, but never lifted a finger to make that a reality while gays and lesbians were struggling for Civil Rights, but then once the tide had turned and the public was in support of full on gay marriage were all of a sudden adamant that the government shouldn't be involved in marriage. TOO LATE MOTHER FUCKERS. YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE TO ROW AND THUS DICTATE DIRECTION; YOU STOOD ON THE SHORE.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe we aren't moving towards that watershed direction (maybe the polls about public sentiment are wrong). So be it. I'm gonna be rowing and I'm gonna be making sure common sense gun owners have a voice when it comes to where this boat is heading.

That said I could be wrong. These mass killings could slow down. The country's urbanization and movement into a creative/innovative economy could reverse. The net loss that rural areas are seeing could reverse. The concentration of guns into fewer and fewer hands could reverse. The polls showing ~70% support for more gun control could be wrong. The 'here is the line on guns, we go no further' camp could have a chance.

That could happen.

But it won't happen with my support. I'll be on the other side, trying to make sure the pendulum doesn't swing too far.

well Tafkats allow to to address your points:

1) only a tiny percentage of gun owners have "automatic" weapons. No "automatic" weapons used in the past few school shootings unless I missed something. Granted what the media considers "assault" weapons were used - is that what you meant?
2) when you legally purchase a weapon there is now a sales record of it with your name, the weapon type & serial number, etc. so "registration" is moot. By this point you are already vetted & approved to purchase said weapon.
3) I agree with you here! Make weapons training no more intrusive & expensive than getting a driver's license and I'm on board. And like vehicles, there should be categories & levels. Drive an 18 wheeler should entail more skill than driving a Toyota Corolla. If you really want to own military grade weapons you should undergo more training & have more skin in the game.
4) I think gun violence is already tracked by the FBI and possibly other agencies but I would have to research that. Granted further study by differing groups should be encouraged as it should be for any complicated subject.
