No, he'd be more likely to put it like..

"It's not that conservatism is GOOD, it's that my straw man of socialism is always, always, always WORSE! Our guy eats a baby? Your guy would have eaten 2 babies! My vote saved that extra baby. You're welcome. :bailey:".

In my defence he may well have been factually correct. Biden may well have signed dozens of executive orders.

What was misleading was the way he presented that as though Biden had backtracked on his campaign promises, when in fact those orders were exactly what he had stated as his intent all along.

He was not only misquoting Biden but in context Biden was saying the near opposite.

The quote Oldfella mangled came from a townhall. Biden was asked about his economic plan. He gave a list of policies, some executive actions, some proposed legislation. When asked if he would use executive action to raise taxes on the ultra wealthy he said only a dictator can do everything through executive action.

See, in a lot of places there is gray area. Whether something is covered by statutory or administrative law. Congress bitches about executive overreach all the time but in actuality they like it this way because they don’t have to take responsibility. Why have to take a stand one way or the other when I can just let the President do it?

But when it comes to raising taxes there is no gray area.

    Article I, section 7, clause 1:
All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with amendments as on other Bills.

    Article I, section 8, clause 1:
    The Congress shall have power
    • To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

The power to raise taxes is clearly a power of Congress, not the Executive.

OMG! Biden said he would follow the Constitution! That he couldn’t use executive actions to raise taxes on the ultra wealthy. But that he would use them in the places the Executive does have authority over. He then went and listed almost all of those on his campaign website. AND THEN HE DID THAT EXACT THING!

The hypocrisy! So much for the tolerant left!

When is @oldfella1962 going to realise that Biden doesnt have to be the third coming of Jesus. All he needs to do is make less of a cunt of it than Trump.

Really, thats not a hard task, even for someone Joes age.

It won't get any better than that, because 30% is pretty much the level of the hard-core Trump supporters who will disapprove of anything Biden does because he's a Democrat.

To be honest, there are also a good many people on the left who will disapprove of anything a Republican does, just because he's a Republican. Which means that Biden's approval rating on dealing with Covid is actually running near 100% among those who actually think about it, instead of just reacting on the basis of who is doing it.

One good thing about Manchin playing fuck-fuck games with the American Rescue Plan was that Republicans got so tired they just started to go home.

Schumer realized that there were enough Republicans left in the chamber to have a quorum but not enough to stop the confirmation so snap brought up Garland and got him confirmed.

    SUCK IT MCCONNELL!

I feel like there are American Rescue Plan discussions happening in three different threads.

Considering how big and how much a sea change this legislation is I wonder if it deserves its own thread?

I won't ever vote for a Republican again, because of what the party is. But that's different than saying there aren't any Republicans I can approve of, they are just very few and far between now.

My congressman for example recently came out and supported the existence of climate change and the need to mitigate it, which should be the default stance of any sane human at this point.

I tweeted to him my approval, and told him I heartily endorse this stance.

But then I finished by saying you voted to overthrow our democracy the same day domestic terrorists attacked the capitol to do the same thing, and that some things you can never recover from, and if he had any honor at all he'd resign in disgrace.

Because fuck this political party and their fascism.

Sorry. I skipped a step. He used the moment to close debate on Garland’s confirmation setting up an up or down vote (which then only needed 50 votes).

Once McConnell’s bullshit was side stepped he passed 70-30. :dayton:

    Yep.

I still vote on issues and character not party.

It’s just that ‘who will you caucus with’ is the biggest issue and no Republican has any character.

Theoretically there could be a pro-choice, pro-science, good-governance (as opposed to crony government) anti-Trump Republican, that renounces the current party leadership and pledged to caucus with Dems until the Republican Party returns to sanity that I could vote for.... but in this reality it is safe to say that I will not be voting for a Republican any time soon.

There is a difference, though, between "I will never vote for this party" and "I disagree with everything anyone from this party does, simply because they are from this party." In the same way, there is a difference between "I vote regularly or even always for this party" and "I approve of everything anyone from this party does, simply because they are from this party."

My point was that there are people on both sides who have that "everything my side does is right and everything the other side does is wrong" attitude, but that if they are taken out of the equation, Biden's approval rating on handling Covid, among those who evalutate on the basis of the issues and what has been done, rather than simply on the basis of who did it, it pretty close to 100%.

I'll admit he's the president. "Our" president? Not so much.
Obviously I'll pay him the proper respect due his position, if not the actual person - which is fair & reasonable.
