A decade or so ago @K. suggested nationalizing FB (or maybe just setting up a public alternative) which I thought ridiculous but after the last 5 years I’m not so sure any more.

Yes, very much the latter, not nationalizing anything. But for the same reason that the government should provide a neutral post office, neutral PBS, and frankly neutral telecommunication services (I know, they often don't), they should also provide one neutral social network when that becomes a relevant means of communication.
