The bill prohibits any discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation in lower grades. A strict read of the bill means the kid with gay parents can't talk about their parents until they're in grade four.

So "Don't Say Gay" is actually pretty accurate.

Having read the legislation how would you summarise it's intent?

This hinges upon how one defines "reasonably prudent." I'm not going to attempt to ascribe how you might feel about things like spanking. Regardless of how you or I might feel about the issue, I think that we can both agree there are limits to the kind of physical punishment parents can inflict on their children and the kind of circumstances in which they might be used.

My sixth-grade teacher had the last name of Carter, and she was nicknamed "Sergeant Carter" after the guy in the Gomer Pyle USMC TV series because of how strict she could be. Kids, of course, have no idea of how bad things can be, so they will call their parents "fascists" for taking away their XBox or Playstation due to bad grades. That teacher said that she didn't believe that there was such a thing a child abuse because she felt if a kid was punished, then they obviously did something wrong.

I have no idea of if she was being serious or not. She might have just been saying that to scare us or she might have meant it. She might also have been naive and didn't believe that parents could murder their own children. I don't know.

I do know, however, that I wouldn't think anything about a kid saying that they were gay/bi/trans or whatever, unless they told me not to mention it to their parents. In which case, I could run afoul of the law. Because even though the kids might think that their parents would freak out over such news, doesn't mean that they will. Then again, they might. So, remind me again, why a teacher should have to worry if a student speaks to them in confidence that they might be breaking the law if the teacher doesn't say something to the parents?

Save for the fact that it considers the possibility that children undergoing treatment for gender dysphoria disorder constitutes child abuse. What happens when one parent believes that their child is telling the truth about being trans and wanting puberty blockers (since that's about all a trans minor can hope for), while the other parent thinks that this is a "phase" the child is going through? Some would say that putting a child on puberty blockers would constitute abuse, while others wouldn't.

Put yourself in the following situation: You're a teacher and one of your students mentions that they're on puberty blockers. Because of other things that the child has said, you know that their parents are either divorced or are going through the process of divorce. You don't know which parent is the custodial one, and which one has visitation rights (or is prohibited from interacting with that child). What do you do? Is the kid a victim of abuse? Do you know how to contact one of the parents to get an answer (that won't put the kid in jeopardy)? Can you be certain that if you hand things off to law enforcement that things will be okay so far as the kid is concerned? I dunno, but I doubt that the average income of a teacher is worth trying to figure out such headaches. YMMV.

Often can feel that way, but UA does have a different way of looking at things so he may well have a different interpretation of the bills intent.

Which could lead to some interesting opportunities. If there's an organization that's planning to sue every time a school uses a book that features a heterosexual couple, on the grounds that that's discussing sexual orientation, I'd like to donate to it.

For that matter, simply referring to kids as "boys" and "girls" is discussing gender identity. Bring on the lawsuits.

I would agree with this and say the FL Supreme Court would have tossed this bill back when they were more centrist. They now have a solid Republican majority thanks to DeSantis, so expect them to uphold this idiotic bill.

I may be misremembering but I think a prior version of the bill was more extreme and wanted to out kids, hence the Don’t Say Gay moniker.

It did, a Republican proposed amendement said that the school would have to inform parents within six weeks even if it was initially determined that such disclosure could be harmful to the child.

As it is, the passed bill includes things like
    And

Which is vague, and would seem to censor classroom discussion.

For example let's say the class has an exercise to paint their families, and then goes around with each student showing their painting. One of them has two fathers, or two mother's, and that is noticed by another student who calls it out as a mistake in their painting. Under many interpretations of the laws it would be forbidden for the teacher to explain that they do actually have two parents the same gender.

Yes, the law could definitely be abused to try to push LGBTQ families out of the picture. I’m rolling my eyes at all the fundies who are celebrating their so-called “anti-grooming” bill.

"That's a question for your parents, sweety."
    Easy peasy.

And I would be wary of any "educator" who harbors even a half-hearted desire to exclude parents or conceal curriculum from them.

Exactly, you easily interpret that to be safe the teacher should avoid saying anything that acknowledges the existence of validity of gay people. Now ask yourself if they would have to give the same hand wave to any story a child gives involving a heterosexual couple. If not, how might you summarise a bill which prevents teachers mentioning gay people but not straight people...

The defeated amendment would have meant that if a student came to a teacher saying they were gay and terrified of their parents finding out, the school would have been legally obligated to inform the parents.

If you don't think that's clearly wrong then this discussion is pointless because we have no common understanding of basic human decency.

Define terrified. Are we talking about the kid getting a beating? Also isn’t this for little kids who have no concept of sexual orientation?

Little kids have a concept of sexual orientation.

I knew from an early age that I had a mom and a dad, and they were married. That's sexual orientation.

In second grade, I had a crush on a redheaded girl named Shannon. That's sexual orientation.
