Tennessee House of Representatives expels Democratic lawmaker

“It’s morally insane that a week after a mass shooting took six precious lives in my community here in Nashville, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, their first action is not to take actions to rein in this proliferation of weapons of war in our streets, but it’s to expel their colleagues for standing with our constituents."

Those are the words of Rep. Justin Jones, who was expelled today by the GOP-dominated Tennessee legislature because he broke the rules of decorum by protesting Tennessee's stupid gun laws with a bullhorn. Two other Democrat representatives will likely be expelled as well for participating in the same protest.

“How can you bring dishonor to an already dishonorable house?”

Truer words have never been spoken.

I don't recall Ashli Babbitt trying to overturn any elections lately. :bergman:

But seriously, the whole "you can't kill them, it'll just make them into a martyr" thing is bunk. If that's how it worked, the Black Panthers would have ruled America for decades. :clyde:

    Nope.

    Only one other was expelled.

While three Dem reps participated in the protest and all three did the exact same thing and all three were brought up for expulsion, only two were kicked out.

I’ll give you three guesses as to which two.

OK, I will admit to my ignorance here.

What does this actually mean? Doers this mean they need a new election? Does this mean their districts are not represented until next election because they can't vote? Does the Judicial get to weigh in and force the legislature to count their votes?

This whole threat of kicking out an elected member of congress was absurd to begin with. We cannot have a legitimate representative legislature if one side can just kick out or silence the other side because they do not like what they are saying.

I will say some of this started with the ideas of what to do with MTG and boebert due to their dangerous actions, but you have to let them do their elected job of representing. Yes, you restrict them from coming to the floor with a gun or bringing others into the building to stop legislation, which I think the dems of TN actually did. I get that they have to keep order in the legislature, and if the reps are disorderly they should be removed for the time that they are disorderly and face fines or perhaps some short contempt jail time. But you cannot just eliminate their position.

I do not exactly understand what is going on here. I get that they disrupted the legislature using their position in it to do so. Part of making a scene is facing the consequences of making a scene. But that should not nullify their election or representation. If you are going to eliminate those particular people from representing their constituents then you need to have an immediate election for new representatives, and you might find the people demand they be put into their place in the legislature with a new victory which is how the people get to force the legislature to deal with their message.

The Speaker of the House said that the TN lawmakers were expelled for participating in an 'insurrection' when students protested the lack of action on gun control after the Nashville shooting.

According to the Tennessean, the newspaper with the highest circulation in Nashville, "No demonstrators broke into the Capitol, no one was arrested or injured, and no property was damaged."

At least two TN lawmakers were at the actual insurrection on Jan 6th.

And another had admitted to having sex with a minor on three separate occassions.

None of them were expelled for their actions.

    MAGA pieces of shit.

One of the lawmakers, Justin Jefferson, who was expelled for joining the crowd in the crowd area and protesting with them was also responsible for the campaign to remove Nathaniel Beford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the KKK, from capital grounds.

Hope the young man is sent right back. He's doing his people proud.

And if you want an abject lesson in how to ensure that you really fuck shit up, the TN state government has been doing it for months now. See, about a month or so ago, the state government voted to slash the size of the Nashville city council. (Because too many brown people were winning seats on it.) This pissed a lot of people off, regardless of political affiliation. Honestly, if Jones and Pearson don't run again, they'll be in big trouble because of how pissed off folks have been about what's happening in the TN assembly. Oh, and the GOP (thanks to gerrymandering) has almost total control of the assembly, so it's not like the expulsion is going to allow them to engage in some fuckery that they haven't been able to do until now. It's just them being giant dicks because they can.

They also refused to expel members who were guilty of corruption. And they had to pass a law back in the 80s barring members from having cans of Donald Duck Orange Juice on the floor because so many members were putting vodka in the cans. 10 years ago, a news organization claimed that TN had the most corrupt state government in the country. At that time, there were more Dems in power than there are now. Safe to say that the balance hasn't tipped to less corruption in the years since.

That's a pleasant surprise. In many states, it's a special election called at the discretion of the governor, and guess what type of district usually causes Republican governors to wait the longest.

It's a perfectly valid statement. Either you favor violence when it's in "your" favor or you advocate for non-violence in EVERY situation.

Republicans have proven over and over that they lack empathy for anyone but themselves, and they don't give a shit about fixing any problem unless it impacts them directly. So I want them to have "skin in the game," because that's the only way to make them better people.

I want the Republicans that oppose gun control to get shot or at least shot at enough that they realize guns aren't toys.

I want the Republicans that support total abortion bans to find their family members requiring urgent lifesaving abortions themselves.

I want the Republicans that oppose covid vaccines to catch covid and suffer long-term debilitating symptoms.

I want to homophobic and transphobic Republicans to have nothing but gay and trans children and grandchildren.

I want karma to fuck each and everyone one of them without lube.

You. Cannot and should not control anyone but yourself. Any attempts otherwise, just means you're the opposite side of the same coin.

you can oppose the opposition verbally, here. Like we always do. you can vote. But, if you want "Republicans" to stop being violent, then you also need to not be violent.
