The value of Disney's assets is approx. $200-billion according to their SEC filings from last year. They have about $93-billion in liabilities, which I assume includes the $48-billion in cash debt. By my calculations (forgive the math in the Red Room) that means the company is worth about $107-billion.

I agree that Disney is really struggling on a number of fronts, but they hardly sound like a company that's in deep trouble. Also, the fact that they decided not to pursue the corporate office in Floriduh likely had more to do with the change in company leadership than anything the dumbass government is doing.

I never said they were in deep trouble

But at least we agree that the Gov. had nothing to do with Disney's decision.

Disney is also making major cuts at Pixar.

Disney is the perfect example of how long it takes to turn a battleship. I think it's taken the Jeb! Bush, Rick Scott and DeSantis eras to give them the message that something is going badly wrong in Florida. The Bullet Train between Tampa and Orlando would have been an amazing asset for the region as well as Disney. Of course Disney being a rapacious mega-corp wanted the only "Orlando" stop to be at their complex, which would have made easier their goal of keeping visitors from wandering outside the boundaries of the former Reedy Creek Improvement District. In any case, between Jeb! Bush flouting the will of the people who voted for a constitutional amendment to build a bullet train and Prick Scott turning down federal money for the project, maybe, just maybe the coin dropped at Mouse House HQ. If Scott hadn't turned down the money, the damn thing would have been finished by now and would have become a glittering showpiece for Florida with work under way on the Tampa/Miami link. Instead Florida got Brightline, which is it's only fair to say, better than nothing, but just so happens to be a project that has deep ties to friends of Scott. Nothing spawns corruption like railroads. So California got the Federal money and is nowhere near carrying passengers. :brood:

I don’t doubt that Florida is attracting new businesses because of the low tax environment. The problem continues to lie with the talent pool. Just because you opened an office in Brickell doesn’t mean you have Ivy League grads lining up to work there. There are also the creatives who have no interest in leaving Los Angeles to move to Orlando.

You don't need an Ivy league degree to work at Disney or pretty much anywhere else. Ivy leagues are nothing more than fancy names for institutions that charge ridiculous amounts of money so that people can say they went to one. It's not a guarantee that they are any more qualified than someone that went to a non-ivy league school. Plus there are plenty of schools in Florida that are on par with the Ivy League. The talent pool in Florida is just fine.

Having lived in Florida almost my entire life I can say there is a problem with the talent pool. Candidates are not on par with what is available in the Tri-state area, or even Georgia for that matter.

The U is a nice school for rich kids and internationals, but they don’t tend to stick around South Florida after they graduate.

I'd trust Southern universities to produce decent graduates except in Politics, Religious Studies or any branch of Biology.

I've lived in Florida most of my life as well. I also lived in Georgia for a few years and......no. The only two things that make the Georgia candidate pool look good is the even worse education states of Mississippi and Alabama.

The schools that make up the Ivy league are for rich kids and internationals. Unless you are lucky enough to get a scholarship.
No one sticks around South Florida due to the high crime that infests the area. Most people who want to live a quality life move to central or north florida. Plus migration patterns show that few are sticking around the northeast area that make up the Ivy League. Want to take a guess of where they are moving to?

It was a Florida State University research team that won the race to synthesize Taxol which was a breakthrough drug for treating breast cancer. Political Science is a strong subject at FSU.
Florida State's also a major player when it comes to high powered research and development in magnetism. There's plenty to snipe at when it comes to Florida. I'll be glad to help, but it's also only fair to make sure not to paint with too broad of a brush. :spock:

First guy is a chemist, not a biologist. He also did it 25 years ago, per your link - the race to the bottom of the educational barrel was only just kicking off then.

Second link shows they give out lots of degrees, but how are those degrees viewed?

"Solidly in" the top 15%. Know what that reads like to me? They're just in there. Also, they aren't in the top 10%.

I didn't mention physics, so why bring magnets into it?

Anyhoo, back to DeSantis - seems he's pushing to have the Disney trial postponed until after the Presidential election. Either hoping he can get in and thus crush them with the power of POTUS, or that he can not have "got my arse kicked by Disney" on his record while he's campaigning.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/en...fter-2024-election_n_649b0f4de4b0a279a230c264

Also, he is “in favor of eliminating” the Education, Commerce and Energy departments as well as the IRS. And if Congress won't back him on that, he'll instead co-opt those agencies for his War on Woke.

Context. The implication is that Florida universities are a bunch of diploma mills. They may end up that way if DeSantis keeps it up, but for the moment, they're better than they were when I was that age...you know just after the dinosaurs died out...
Anyway, DeSantis is starting to have a direct impact on Florida's economy.

FF probably thinks Django is a hate filled black film that completely lies about the glorious practice of racial slavery and ignores how the slavers helped those poor black folks.

I could totally see one of FFs ancestors arguing over cutting eye holes in their bedding while going to lynch someone.
