You also had the Kennedy loon in them until recently, you can't cherry pick a few members and use them to define them as a whole, anymore than anyone could resurrect Thurmond and his Democratic career and expect to be taken seriously.

If you don't have a plurality of electable parties, then your electable parties become a wide tent as people find the nearest fit, how that is handled displays how mature that party is. The crazies are generally gatekept and handled at national politics level, however I like to think Trump shows that gatekeeping can fail quite spectacularly, and if you end up with the crazies taking over the grassroots, that failure will happen.

And one of the problems you get with any group of crazies, is that an officer class can appear - usually middle class white people with too much time on their hands - and they don't need to be in politics to cause trouble, they just need to feel they can kick off some kind of revolution.

I think they'd still have support, but it would have been more muted - the expanding, arming and implicit support of violence of Israeli communities in the West Bank is on a par, if not scale, with the Chinese expanding their territory on the sly.

In some ways I get it, the West Bank is a bigger problem for Israel, with the proximity of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, than Gaza is. An independent West Bank with a military could skewer the heart of Israel and capture Jerusalem wholly. That should be a justification for a peace, underlined with the understanding that any attack from the West Bank would be met with such force that it would permanently cease to exist as anything other than a DMZ, rather than ramping up justifications for a war.

But that kind of expansion sits uneasily, and provides meat for senses of victimhood and grievances - it's very easy to start justifying anything when you've a good enough quote for it, "I'm a victim", "God is on our side", or it's secular equivalent, "Right side of History." All very nice soundbites, but also empty phrases at heart.

So Israel needs to stop doing that kind of expansion. Will it stop Hamas and their ilk? No, but it removes a current set of excuses and justifications, if not the historical ones, but importantly removes a potential block for international partners to give wholehearted support. Plus, it's the right thing to do.

I have met them. They are there, and I actually think they are more of a problem for the left that the left has to police and clean up themselves. The right is intellectually dishonest, but they do at times point out a real problem. The left is the present home to tolerance and academic thought. It is where our safe spaces and support exist. We cannot allow the terrorists to take hold here because they destroy tolerance and safe spaces with their intollerance. We cannot ensure the acceptance of jews or muslims when we allow for terroristic hate to hit either group within our boundaries.

There is a difference between moderation of hate messages and sending a hate message. In emotional situations where horrific images of war come around, the left has to recognize the difference between allowing someone to grieve and experience healthy anger, and to then put that anger towards abuse and assault to another group within their ranks.

As the outsiders to the Isreali/palestinian conflict, and that leads to jewish/islamic agressions we need to be the calming voice that isolates the victims in a protective bubble, but does not allow for the hate to go after the other side. The people getting into the one side or the other bullshit on the left are part of the problem we are facing.
