US consumer sentiment races to 2-1/2-year high; inflation expectations ease

    By Lucia Mutikani
January 19, 202411:05 AM PSTUpdated 4 hours ago

    Summary
    • Consumer sentiment index rises 13% to 78.8 in January
    • Inflation expectations edge lower from December
    • Existing homes sales fall 1.0% in December; prices up

WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - U.S. consumer sentiment improved in January, hitting the highest level in 2-1/2 years amid growing optimism over the outlook for inflation and household incomes, which bodes well for the economy's prospects this year.

The better-than-expected reading in sentiment reported by the University of Michigan on Friday reflected a brightening of moods across all age and income groups, education and geographical locations as well as political affiliation.

How about a city that didn't literally burn down to the last building  , but suffered millions in property damage from your "fiery but mostly peaceful" heroes? How about several fucking cities?

Would you care then? No. Because 1) it's not your city, and 2) the perpetrators do not express the "wrong" opinions.

If it was a bunch of bikers in MAGA hats, you would shoot blood from your asshole screaming for them to be hanged as traitors.

In light of the economy's stubborn and oh-so-annoying refusal to collapse, Federal Farmer has had to resort to posting stories about how people feel like the economy is bad. Sadly, that option seems to be evaporating as well.

U of M survey shows double-digit increases in consumer sentiment for the second straight month

For the second consecutive month, there has been a sharp rise in consumer sentiment in the U.S., a rate not seen in more than 30 years.

According to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers released on Friday, consumer sentiment saw a 13% jump in January, reaching its highest level since July 2021. Combined with a 14% hike in December, it’s the largest two-month increase since 1991 when the Gulf War ended and the U.S. came out of a recession.

Blast that Biden economy! Why won't it fail? Don't people know that Democrats are always bad for the economy?

If repugs are relying on things not turning around for Biden, they are stupid.

The only reason for the low is the dems are fearmongering their fundraising from the sheeple. It is the same things repugs are using with the immigration crisis and not wanting to fix it. The only problem for the repugs is their glorious orange moron is so fucking obvious and does not know when to STFU.

I know some Very Serious People had a legitimate, well founded and not at all regurgitating right wing talking points concern about the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

So they’ll be super excited about the purchase of 3m barrels.

    https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDOECESER/bulletins/387edb7

Oh wait. Wrong link. That is to last week’s purchase of 3m barrels. Here’s the one for this week’s.

I hope all those Very Concerned People can sleep a little better now.

6 million into a 714 million capacity that still sits around half full. Lowest since what? The 80's? I'm sure you meant to mention that.

One of my memories as a young buck was listening to my friend’s parents talk about how great Reagan was for the economy and the stock market was doing so well. Remember kids, that’s only allowed when a Republican is President.

Can you imagine the media uproar if the Democrats started chanting All Time High! at the DNC?

Can you imagine all the crazy when you pop all the financial bubbles obscuring the core values of society and it becomes socialist. Not with the racist, sexist, prejudiced packing it came in.

If the human race is not going to be wiped out we are heading towards communism. It is just a matter of how long it takes us to round up the idiots so we can do it right. Don't be afraid all communist hating people, but in the end the only scarcity that cannot be solved is individualism. That is because it doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Given that jobs are not actually mentioned in the story, it would appear not.

It's also interesting that a decrease in retail sales gets the headline, but the similarly sized increase in restaurant sales gets stuck down in paragraph four.
