It is worth noting that Ohio State athletes are the rough equivalent of Navy athletes.

That's cuz you got no conference pride, or hope of beating them. In the SEC you like your adversaries to do well, so that your victories over them are that much sweeter. :diablo:

Shit talking aside, we DO tend to watch every SEC game we can. For instance I watched the South Carolina, MS State, Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Georgia (what I could anyway) games. Can't speak for other teams, but almost every Auburn fan did the same, and I imagine it isn't much different. I wonder if this inflates the ratings numbers and is part of the reason ESPN/ABC signed that big exclusive contract with us.

Sorry but you get no pass, there is no excuse for cheering for a rival.

Ah, see, but that would mean we couldn't root for anyone. This isn't the Big XII where you have a couple good teams, but a whole host. So what do you mean by 'Rival'? The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry? Of course Bama and College Footballs Greatest Rivalry counts, but what about The Tiger Bowl Rivalry?

Anyone (except Alabama) playing out of conference is rooted for. It's strategic, as well as just good sportsmanship. I mean, seriously, it's all fun, and you have a good time whereever in the SEC you go tailgate, so you want your fellow teams to do well. Why would you NOT root for them?

After having kept up with the Huskies last season, I was pretty damn shocked that they gave LSU a run for their money early on. Cliched as it may seem though, the SEC IS a tough conference, and we play tough for 4 quarters. It's hard to hang with that for too long.

    G'night all!

#12 Cal - Maryland game was good! California 52, Maryland 13. Suck it bitches!! I will write more about it later, but it was an enjoyable game. Best and Vereen showed up and played hard. Kevin Riley had a 65% completion rate. The wide receivers played well. Anger punted extremely well (as usual!! :P). It was a good day for California football!

This is the proper way to view your own conference. First your team, second, your conference.

Never understood morons who wanted to see all of their rivals lose all the time. So now if you beat them, it's not worth anything. If you lose to them, it's a huge embarrassment.

So Powa doesn't understand what rivalry really is. It's kind of sad really because I think that means he can't truely understand what it means to love a team. The two go hand in hand.

Every damn year this comes up, it's obvious there are some cultural differences. For whatever reason the SEC and the Big Ten have this unified outlook that simply doesn't exist here in the Big XII. Perhaps the SEC thing stems from the South's cultural identity.

That is not something that the Big XII shares. You can't lump the Texas schools in together, they have distinct identities. Aggies and Raiders get into fist fights in the stands, annually. You can't put the Cowboys and Sooners together, as far as football goes they occupy opposite ends of the spectrum. The Big XII North? An entirely different animal. Colorado could almost be a Pac 10, or Mountain West school.

Look at it from Tex's point of view last year, Texas/OU/Texas Tech all tied with one loss at the end, and the Red Raiders get the shaft. What good did a Texas or OU non conference win do them last year? Is he supposed to feel better that a team Tech beat got to go to a better bowl?

A comet could hit the OU/Texas game this year, and Tex and I aren't going to lament the loss for the conference. :bailey:

Of course, Michiganers are an insular and incestuous lot, as the current problems with their football, as well as their economy illustrate. :bergman:

^ I wonder how much history, relatively compact size, and 'Southern Hospitality' also have to do it.

We've been a conference since 1932, back when football was a gentleman's sport. Hell most of us have been playing each other for over a hundred years. Some of that tradition could have made it through the decades. Also, being relatively close means it is no big deal to go on the road. You usually go to one or two road games a year. I've partied in T'town, Athens, Oxford, and Baton Rouge multiple times and had a damn good time everytime. Everyone was very hospitable and more interested in drinking and shooting the shit instead of fighting and talking shit. In fact Baton Rouge has a bad reputation and we had more people come up, apologize, offer us food, beer ect. than we had drunk fans hassling us.

That's everywhere. The internets are full of Georgia folk today, complimenting the hospitality yesterday in Stillwater.

I also have it on good authority that the people sleeping over in a campus parking lot last night were awakened by RV horns when some Mormons beat a certain conference foe. :bergman:

I will say that I have a certain hatred for ou and tu that I don't have for OSU or A&M. Many of my fellow Raiders won't agree about the Aggies though. LSU losing to Washington would have been such a huge upset that I don't understand how anyone outside of Baton Rouge could be againt it especially given that the loss could potentially help you in the long run.

First off, there's nothing that can be sad about it.

What's sad is middle aged men having their weeks/seasons ruined because "their" team lost. And when I say "their" team, I mean a team that they picked arbitrarily because they happen to be the best team from their state / nearby state. If someone is applying colored body paint and they didn't go to that school, they're just a sad motherfucker.

At any rate, I want what's best for my team. That means that (if it were possible), every team would win every single game except when they played my team, then they'd lose. So, for example, Ohio State doesn't play MSU this season. Therefore, I'd like them to lose against every team that we DO play, despite the fact that they are the same conference. As I said, my team first. If the results don't influence my team, then I'll root for the conference.

If you are really a fan of your team you wouldn't be rooting for negative things to happen to them, just because you happen to dislike some other team.

On the surface, your perspective seems, rational, classy, and even beneficial. The reality is that this kind of thinking is wrong, counterproductive, and pure bad nasty evil.

The nature of college football is such that anything good for your rival is bad for you. Period. Why? These aren't just your rivals on the field. They're your rivals in the living rooms of every recruit you want to play for your team. When a team like LSU, with their history of dominant and dirty recruiting, stumbles on the field it is cause for rejoicing. Your ONLY concern should be the success of your own team. If you benefit by the follies of your conference rivals, then consider that a bonus. I doubt you'll be toasting to the success of the SEC if Bama suddenly rips off a few consecutive national championships and Auburn sinks even further into the depths of obscurity.

I know that you will argue that a strong conference is good for your BCS chances and that's true. But the SEC has more than enough strong teams to ensure that happens each and every year. There is simply no reason for you to actually cheer for a rival team.

As for myself, I could happily watch my rivals lose every game 99-0 and do serious nerve damage to my face from smiling all the time. Fuck Texas. Fuck OU. Fuck Baylor.

The youth movement at Texas A&M is in full swing. We played something like 12 true freshmen last night in a beat down of New Mexico. Despite 13 penalties, A&M racked up over 600 yrds of offense and 41 points despite putting in the 3rd string QB with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

QB Jerrod Johnson had 400 yards of total offense, threw 2 touchdowns with no int's and ran for another touchdown. The A&M defense did not allow a touchdown and forced multiple 3 and outs for the first time since I can remember. DE Von Miller had 3 sacks and currently leads the nation in that category.

A&M will certainly have it's struggles this year, but I'm optimistic about the future. The core of this team is Sophomores, Redshirt Freshmen, and True Freshmen. With another strong recruiting class on it's way, Mike Sherman seems to have the ship pointed in the right direction.

This is sports fandom. A subject of relatively trivial importance in the grand scheme of things.

"Because I want to" is a good enough justification for cheering or not cheering for any team.

Besides, when you're just buying a ball cap, it keeps you flexible enough to root for the hot team.

Auburn has always recruited mostly through it's own camps. We've never ranked high in scouting reports even though according to the commentators last night we are no. 1 in the country for producing Running Backs.

Besides, this the SEC were talking about, who's states produce more players per capita than any part of the country. So we got more people to go around.

Also part of that, is that being in the SEC, you are most likely going to lose a game no matter how good you are. There are just too many quality teams. Strength of schedule is going to be our only counter to that.

It's in Auburn's best long-term interests for this season to be terrible. The sooner Chizik gets fired, the sooner Auburn can hire/buy a good coach.

Both Miami and FSU can kiss my ass but that was an incredible game. Made even better by bad tackling, suspect special teams, and tons of YAC.

In defense of FSU I will say its pretty silly that they dropped out of the Top 25 after losing that close game to Miami.

Do you think these are fair and/or accurate? I'm mixed about California being in the top 10. They played well against Maryland, but there were some plays that really didn't seem like what a top 10 team should be doing.
