Right, but that's true of many "reality" shows. Almost none of them would be produced in the conventional/traditional way because they're too stupid or weird and would fail because the ratings wouldn't justify the cost of hiring actual actors, writers, etc.

By featuring these "amateur" actors and presenting them in the guise of "reality", the producers are able to attract a voyeuristic viewership and keep their costs down at the same time. "Reality" television = cheap television.
