I'm well aware of all of that, what's your point, oh you don't have one so you resort to insults. Typical liberal tactic.

You literally had to remove the context of the speech balloons and the preceding panel to fabricate that point; when I first cited that precise scene in full context back in the first thread on this topic, I pointed out how clearly the character was described by utterly different characteristics than race.

That's because the question makes no sense. The character also has initials that are M. J. W. And yet no actress who has ever played her has the same initials. Unless you can show that race somehow predetermines whether someone can play the role for some reason -- and I've just demonstrated that looks are not such a reason -- there can be no other answer than 'Why the hell not?!'

To remind you -- Stan Lee, who co-created Mary Jane, doesn't give a damn on whether she's portrayed by a non-Caucasian redhead actress. Are you really arguing with Word of God here?
Also, this paragraph in the article Packard posted caught my attention:

Hell, I'm not even sure what religion MJ is supposed to have, but I don't see why an actress of a different religion couldn't play her in any case. And religion is a thing that actually exists in reality.

Since you clearly can't see my point, let me ask it another way. When casting a movie based on fictional characters that have visual representations, why would someone look at pictures of a character that's clearly been depicted as a white person say, "hey lets cast a black girl." Why would they look at that picture and suddenly decide that the character is no longer white? It would be like casting a 45 year old Mexican actor as Johnathan Kent, it makes no sense.

I think I covered that by pointing out that this actress looks more like some of MJ's comic depictions than the white actresses that have played her before. You responded by saying that looks weren't what you're concerned about. So I ask you again, what, since it isn't looks, makes race a factor in casting this role?

Was Martin Sheen a bad choice to play New England aristocrat Josiah Bartlet?

Looks are a concern. Did I not say we shouldn't have a black Superman? Are they going to find an actor that looks exactly like Superman, no, but they should at least try and get as close as possible. I understand taking liberties, but race flipping for the sake of race flipping makes no sense and is dumb.

Because it doesn't matter that the actor looks nothing like the character, right? Oh and giant spiders would totally make sense too.

But I just showed you a picture of MJ in the comics, one which you had even previously emphasized fit your view of the character well, and pointed out that the new casting looks much more like her than the previous two 'racially apt' ones. You said that wasn't the point. So let me ask again: Why is race important at all, and specifically why would it be so much more important than looks?

Well take a look. The character is supposed to be of one of the oldest, best-established New Hampshire families. Here's how he talks and acts when Sheen plays him.

    There's your 59-year-old Hispanic actor.

Well I assumed you didn't share my opinion, but then you said you did. So what is it? Do you think that this woman:

    View attachment 21387

    looks more like this picture:

    View attachment 21388

    than this woman:

    View attachment 21390

    ...?

EDIT: Ok, I am ready to strangle someone over the image function on this board. How the fuck do full insert pics change to 'show attachment' just because I copied the exact same code from one post to the other? What can be done about it? And can we get whoever is responsible for this programming shot, please?

Finally an answer to a simple question. I knew someone could do it. Now let's see if you can answer the follow up question. If you think she's white, then why would you cast a black actress to play a white character? Why not is not an answer.

I thought we were talking about Jonathan Kent there. But this gets even more intriguing. You're now saying that race matters more to the MJ Watson than to President Bartlet -- many of whose storylines revolve around his family history, and often topicalize race and racism? Now you just have to tell us what makes race so central to her character.
