Don't some of the hacks we have come standard with the current vBulletin software anyway? Or else if they're not standard, there's probably addons available at the vBulletin website that do something similar.
Just had a database error crop up. First the site wouldn't load. Then when I refreshed it and it came up as soon as I clicked a link it hit the database error page.
Yeah, I'm not worried about losing hacks. Most modern BBS software has just about everything plus the kitchen sink built into it. Hell, I use a free service, and I could enable rep if I wanted. I think stability and dependability are more important than hacks. I say go for it, Lanz. I'm not sure how long people will put up with the board going down as often as it has. I had a nice little community for a while, 300 people, and now I have 29, and it's because I had an unstable service, and repeated board crashes time and time again. After a while, people got tired of dealing with it, and stayed gone.
There's also some concern about database compatability. If we go to the latest release of vBulletin, will we lose the board's entire history in the process?
Dump vBulletin and go with XenForo like I suggested earlier in the thread. It's much better and the rep is far more dynamic. Several boards I visit use it. Have a look at this one as an example...
Wow. It's almost as if some people are ashamed of what they've posted. As if they'd been less than honest, or were afraid of RL consequences or something...
Now this is the part where, if I let this slide, nothing happens, but if I quote it, "No trolling in the HD!" will be forthcoming. One would think with over a decade of practice you could at least come up with a plausible/original troll...
Xenforo can apparently import vBulletin posts. I mostly just hope Tapatalk functionality stays intact. That's how I access the board probably 80% of the time...
Exactly, not that Lanzman will listen to me. He's probably got a sad little beef to work out where I'm concerned...
Yep. TrekBBS hopes to move to the same software as well. It seems vBulletin has become outdated, outmoded, and too expensive for what little it offers.
True. Yet I'd trade functionality for old threads every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Not to mention everybody is free to save threads at any time. So if it comes down to it, advance notice is all that's needed.
If Lanzman has a big beef for El Chup, I don't want to know about it. Oh, wait, you said the reverse, not the opposite. Phew.
I've also noticed the Clydebot is malfunctioning, posting the same bits of text over and over in some sort of loop program. Perhaps a reboot is in order?
Ten database errors today. Threads not working properly (can't access latest page). Slow load time. Getting beyond a joke now.
