The liberal spin will be: racist white thug attacks elderly black man. Black man turns tables and defends himself against hate crime. #BlackLivesMatter!

So if you got punched in the face you'd shoot the guy who punched you?

Yes it did. As I pointed out already, it specifically said all three men were black. That may be an error, if the troublemaking kid who got shot was actually white, but the article nevertheless mentioned it clearly.

    Wow, nice backpedal there! :backpedal:

That's almost as good as Castle's "I was just testing a character for a book" line. :techman:

Well, to rescue the narrative I'll point out that the shooter, as a retired corrections officer, was just another instrument of white oppression, an Uncle Tom, a Stephen (Samuel L Jackson from Django Unchained), who illustrates the pernicious racist mindset of the American criminal justice system, ready to gun down and kill anyone who even acts authentically black - even white people.

Sadly, some college kid will flesh out that idea in his sociology paper and get an 'A'.

If you were 69 years old and got punched in the face? There's a reason it's called "elder abuse" because for some reason
a 69 year old man might not be as strong/resilient as a 20 year old, especially a group of 20 year olds.
I can't believe I should have to explain this.
Wait.....did you just get punched in the head? Seek medical care immediately, and don't fall asleep!

Under the Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act of 2001, retired POST (or equivalent) certified officer retain their powers, privileges, and responsibilities. My dad is retiring next month after 35 years of service. He will retain his power of arrest and I could see him attempting to detain someone in this situation.

All I know is if my 20 year old son ever did anything like punching a 69 year old in the head the ass-whipping would be epic and painful
to say the least, and getting shot would seem like a lick from a kitten in coomparison.
So has his family starting telling the world what an angel he was? He was probably cranky from long hours of volunteer work
at the local orphan leper colony soup kitchen and school for the blind.

We'd have to define what is a responsibility. You and I may be on two separate sheets of music in that regard. Did you have anything in mind?

Clearly we are. Seems to me retiring is all about getting rid of at least some of your previous responsibilities.

If you want to be technical about it, almost all American citizens have a "power of arrest" in that they can execute a so-called citizen's arrest. Not too many know how to do it properly, tho.

That varies widely from state to state and unless you're well researched in it, you'd be a fool to try it.

Yeah. Like I said, not too many know how. But it's based largely on common law and IIRC almost all the states have some version of it defined in their legislation.

American's are much more familiar with exercising their power to get arrested, in a wide variety of dumbass ways.

The wiki page I used to refer to is actually gone. But, the law only applies to those "qualified" individuals that have, as in currently have, a statutory power of arrest in retired status. I want to say it was amended in 2010 to include retired Military Police (or service equivalent), but don't quote me on that.

Generally speaking I don't think a single person giving you a shot to the head really warrants getting gunned down. That's a pretty reasonable expectation.

Reminds me of a great line from an even better movie:

Lots of fucking pussies in America.

What if the guy he punched shot him. What's your reaction then? He had it coming?

Punching someone in the face is not ok and is a crime. That said, if you stalk him down the block and then to shoot him then that is not self defense but simply murder.

TL, I dislike posting those kind of disclaimers as well but Asyn has made it clear that they MUST be posted every single time or else he will jump in and make up a fantasy about how the poster must not believe that or else you would have posted a disclaimer.

It is stupid but it is better than putting up with Asyn's retarded gotcha games.

^ I and all the people who agreed with that post probably ought to apologize to you for having caused you so much butthurt. I didn't thing pointing out the way you like to paint with a broad brush so much of the time would traumatize you so much.

Maybe some day you'll get over it. Or decide that, just possibly, there was something to be learned from it even though it hurt your feelings so much. One can hope, anyway.

HA! Wouldn't that be some dose of reality? Do a "citizens arrest" and be charged with battery and/or kidnapping depending on how much resistance you encountered.

Unfortunately, a simple punch can be quite complicated.

For good or ill, whether you agree with it or not, using lethal force in defense of self when in fear of serious bodily injury is justified and legal for all persons and not just the Police. Now, that said, this did play out weirdly and I'm going to have to wait for more information before I form an opinion.

YES! I found the X factor that no doubt will tip the scales toward "too bad, so sad" for the shooting victim.
He called the shooter a racial slur. That's the Rubicon right there - "fighting words" if you will.
Damn that dead guy was one dumb fucker. Now I find out he's 32 years old or something?
    This is some weird shit.
